I was able to remove one more bolt but the third bolt got stripped. I am going to disconnect the exhaust downpipe. Also I am going to get a can of spray to help with the seized bolts. I used brake cleaner and it actually worked with the second bolt.

Its time to go clean up so and come enjoy the forum pics and photos after words.

Thank you for the tip.

As long as you disconnect everything attached to the intake and exhaust manifolds, you can remove the head with the manifolds installed. You should be able to remove the fuel rail and disconnect all sensors and throttle linkage fairly easily and then worry about pulling the manifolds on the bench.

I though I needed to remove the air intake manifold, in order to remove the head. Is that right? Can you remove the head with out removing the head at all?

Because if not I have been making a mistake.

Today I went about taking the belt off and disconnected the power steering pump so that I could remove the manifold. At this time I am not even sure if I needed to take the air intake manifold off...

I need some clarification. I am exhausted and my brain does not work anymore

Please tell me if I am in the right track

The two bolts I took out yesterday and the bolt that was sptripped are the ones that connect the pipe to the exhaust manifold. I think I messed up

You may have to break, drill, or cut the bolts that connect the exhaust manifold to the downpipe if they are stripped. I almost always leave intake and exhaust manifolds attached to the head - I am not flexible enough to remove them separately. You may find your task easier with a set of universal or wobble extensions.

I kept on tying today and was able to disconnect the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe I am working on removing the few last bolts off the axhaust manifold right now. Taking a break a little break and I am going to get that thing out.

I am thinking off disconnecting the exhaust pipe and the cats , then remove the cats and make space in order to remove the last 2 bolts from the exhaust manifold.

I will need a new gasket for it i believe if I remove that. But seems to me that will make my job much easier...

Success. I was able to remove the intake exhaust manifold with out having to disconnect the cats...

Now I am moving on to set up the removing the compressor and top dead center and the fun part begins.

Be sure you keep the AC lines connected and just set them and the compressor out of the way. You don't want to have to pay fore new r134a or release any info the environment. I now 134 is far less damaging than R12, but still not a good idea.

Sounds like you're making good headway and learning a lot. Congrats.

Edit: one more piece of advice that may be a little late. Sandwich baggies, masking tape, and a sharpie. Label all hoses with corresponding numbers. IE: Label where the hose connects '1' and the hose '1'. When removing bolts, place them into a lableled sandwich bag - 'Valve cover bolts' 'intake manifold mounting bolts' - ect. This makes re-assembly so much easier.

Thank you for the tip. I have been putting everything in individual Ziploc bags, but the masking tape will be a life saver...

I drained the coolant from the radiator, and now I want to drain the coolant from the engine block, but I cant figure out how. In the manual it tells that the drain plus is at the left side of the engine with the coolant temperature sensor. From my understand the left of the engine is the drivers side. I saw a plug there on the engine block. Its has a square fitting. But its now the any of ratchet that I have in my set, its not its bigger than the smaller one and smaller than 1/2. Do i need to go and buy a tool?

I am not sure what to do, and I am not sure if the plug that i see is the right one. Where this plug? And where is the coolant temperature sensor?

I looked through the manual but I could not see. I will keep on looking...

Thank you for helping me.

I think that it is entirely possible that the Haynes Manual for the Jeep Cherokee was written based on other Jeep models without ever looking under the hood of a Cherokee. Not only do they omit steps, but they are just completely wrong on some critical points.

I dont have tool for the engine block coolant drain plug.

Can I remove the head, or which the components of head can I remove without draining the coolant from the block.

You can remove everything without draining the coolant from the block drain. You can drain the coolant later without issue.
