check all the wires going to the starter to make sure they are clean and tight, also check your battery terminal connections. if these all check out fine my money would be on the solenoid.

What year? The 84-90 Renix has a different solenoid setup than the 91+ setup...

Use a DVOM not the jumper cables to test electrical circuits...Chances are your battery is weak and you need a new one, or the alternator is not operating correctly. Hitting a permanant magnet starter is bad but as long as it isn't smashed too hard you will be able to tell if the brushes are stickng if the starter works from hitting it... An AVR test would tell you a lot as well.

Using the jumper cable method would be last resort...

If you have an auto tranny, first thing to check is that the shifter is in park, not reverse or drive. Sounds dumb, but she wont start in those positions.

my money would be starter or low battery voltage. since you can hear the click(solenoid closing) i would guess not the solenoid. i've had to replace starters twice (different jeeps) sometimes the hammer trick works, sometimes not. check your battery, if the voltage is fine...
