hey guys, well i just went out to start my jeep for the second time today, and when i turn the key, i hear just a little click, and there is nothing, i think its the starter? or could it also be the starter solenoid?? my only question with the starter begin bad is wont u have a few probelsm with it before it totally locks up? this is my only problem iv ever had wit the starting.. if you guys know anyuthing about it I appreciate it and if u could get me a short write up of how to replace them..
check all the wires going to the starter to make sure they are clean and tight, also check your battery terminal connections. if these all check out fine my money would be on the solenoid.

Use a DVOM not the jumper cables to test electrical circuits...Chances are your battery is weak and you need a new one, or the alternator is not operating correctly. Hitting a permanant magnet starter is bad but as long as it isn't smashed too hard you will be able to tell if the brushes are stickng if the starter works from hitting it... An AVR test would tell you a lot as well.
Using the jumper cable method would be last resort...

my money would be starter or low battery voltage. since you can hear the click(solenoid closing) i would guess not the solenoid. i've had to replace starters twice (different jeeps) sometimes the hammer trick works, sometimes not. check your battery, if the voltage is fine...
