Springs heights and their spring rates?

So i have been looking into spring rates and heights. There doesn't seem to be a centralized location for this information. I feel this can help people get the ride and height that they are looking for.

Any information on spring heights and rates is appreciated.

Current info:

Coil Springs:
BDS 3" XJ coil 240lbs/inch

Rough Country 9269, 4.5" 170lbs/in

Sky Jacker 3" ZJ coils 218 lbs/in ~4" on a XJ

OEM is supposedly 147 lb/in rate.
OEM ZJ with 4.0 is supposedly 190 lb/in rate front and rear.

I've documented some info before, but it hasn't been verified so I'm not too sure about the accuracy.

RE 3.5" 250lb/in (similar to yours)
RE 4.5" 169lb/in
RE 5.5" 185lb/in

OME 930 (XJ) 160lb/in
OME 934 (ZJ) 180lb/in

Just as a matter of interest, I've had three of the ones l list fitted in my Jeep before. It started out with the OME 930 (supposed to be a 2" lift, but it's a little less), I then had the OME 934s in to help cope with the extra weight of an ARB bumper and winch and then settled for the RE 4.5" with a spacer to nett me just over 5" with the bumper and winch. Ride wise I can't tell the difference between them, even though the spring rates differ.

shoot the rustys are supposed to be some of the softest, but they seem to ride really really rough.

Here are the specs on the OME rear springs:

CS034RA (OMEJC1A) 5 leaves in pack, 148lbs/inch s.r. 230mm free height
CS034RB (OMEJC1B) 5 leaves in pack, 148lbs/inch s.r. 205mm free height
CS035RA (OMEJC2A) 4 + 1 overload, 137/257lbs/in s.r. 235mm free height
CS035RB (OMEJC2B) 4 + 1 overload, 137/257lbs/in s.r. 210mm free height

This info came straight from an email request from their customer service...... should be accurate. Hope this helps

Some info to add.

According to RE, the spring rate for both their RE1463 3.5" and RE1462 4.5" XJ leaf spring packs is 190lbs/in.

RE1463 3.5" (6 leaf) = 190lbs/in
RE1462 4.5" (6 leaf) = 190lbs/in

For the DPG Offroad TrailGunner springs:

DPGXJ5 DPG Trailgunner 5" coils = 198lbs/in.

DPGXJ35-0 DPG TrailGunner 5" Leafs (7 leaf) = 233lbs/in

Unfortunately I don't have free height measurements for any of the springs (didn't occur to me at the time to measure them when I had a set of RE springs and DPG springs together). The RE springs have 6 leafs, the DPG springs have 7.

FWIW, here's the RE1463 3.5" leaf spring compared to the 5" DPG leaf spring. Despite being rated at different heights, they'll net the same amount of lift to probably within 1/2" of eachother.

DPG spring on top, RE spring bottom.

DPG spring in back, RE in front.

edit: Also, here is the RE 5.5" coil vs the DPG 5" coil. RE coil is grey. The DPG 5" coils will yield ~1" less height than the RE 5.5" coils.

Hello,

I know this topic is what older but here in Europe we have tested the Rusty
9" XJ Coils and i can tell you they were not the 180 lbs/inch what they say.

We have tested last month 2 different 9" coil springs here in europe on 2 different machines and they gave a complete different spring rate as what Rusty is telling. Here are the figures for the 9" coil spring.

The spring rate for these 2 coil springs were between the 241.18 and 251.85 lbs / inch

So they are harder as they tell you and these measurements are very precise.

Greetings

It's the shocks that ride rough. Once I put OME shocks on Rusty's regular springs, my front end was suuuuper soft. Couple that with a heavy bumper and I was bottoming out all the time.

Judging by the lengths and rates, I should have gone with a DPG 5" spring on my RE 4.5" lift and Rigid bumper to level it out with the rear. I'd rather do that than add a spacer, but I gotta go cost effective right now.

This is great tech info guys, thanks to everyone for posting up.

does anyone know why RE 's coils are so different over their heights? I would think that the higher you get the more spring rate you will need to keep said amount of lift. It seems by their numbers it is just the opposite.

3.5" = 241
4.5" = 169
5.5" = 185

Any thoughts?

My guess would be that it's like that to match the rear leafs. The 3.5" lift as an example uses a spring pack that mounts onto the original shackle which would thus give a bit of a stiffer ride. The 4.5" lift uses the same leaf pack but with longer shackles to thus it give the rear leaf a bit more room to move and possibly a softer ride. The 5.5" lift likely uses a spring pack that's a little stiffer of with more curve and a replacement shackle and that is why their coils have slightly higher spring rate to the 4.5" lift coils?

This is purely a guess.
