What year, and define "better".
"Sport" and "Classic" define Trim and Options packages (color matched bumpers, power windows, etc). The underlying vehicle is the same.
And since options can be applied to either, one man's Sport can be the same as another man's Classic...

And GOOGLE can tell you all of this.

As said, define better for you.

They are the same jeep deep down.

Classic trim package comes with power windows and locks. Overhead console with temp, trip, mpg status. Painted side molding and bumper end caps etc etc.
The sport trim does not come with the creature comforts. But less electrical gremlins.to fix if something were to fail

Wikipedia or GOOGLE can give you a full list.

Classic does not come with over head console with all that he said. Once I owned my classic and was driving around I started to nitce that my jeep is much nicer then my buddies. The all Color match is great and people are envious. But don't do that. Pick Wich jeep is better. Lower miles and rust. Look underneath and see what axles and what transfer case it has. Mine has a 242 and I wish it didn't

My classic has none of that listed.

Manual windows, manual locks, no console.

In fact mine only has the 231, tilt, cruise, upgraded stereo. That's it

Sport or classic? Thats a question you ask when buying new. When buying used its pretty much guaranteed to be irrelevant because the odds of you finding two XJs that are so similar in all other regards are pretty much 0. Better questions to ask/things to look at:

Current condition of important wear items that will get inspected (tires, brakes, steering, etc)
Fluid condition (Transmission, diffs, t-case)
Maintenance history
Rust (floor boards, rockers, bottom of doors that you can barely see)
Individual options you care about (ABS, cruise control, power windows/locks, etc)

Also worth mentioning, you can swap just about any option into any XJ, and the commonly sought after things like CC, power windows and locks, overhead console are usually easy to find and not difficult to swap. About the only feature I can think of that you pretty much have to buy the way you want is ABS. Way too much going on there to swap in after the fact. A manual transmission if absolutely necessary is also much easier to buy already equipped than swapping, but this is still doable. Specific options are also easier to add/replace than repairing rust or fixing mechanical issues from neglect.

So to answer your question: It doesn't matter and you're asking the wrong question.

It wasn't the question I asked when buying. I was simply wondering the difference because I didn't see a difference other than the color matched panels

Couple things I observed here
1. Your first thread was a flop because nobody cares classic or sport
2. You started another thread, and not in the non tech section
3. This isn't tech at all.
4. When you grow up big and strong, you will have an opinion and that will be when and where you will find which is better

holy crap! Go look at them! Which do you like? Neither is superior, its all preference of the buyer. For example I prefer old and beaten, no power windows (that crap breaks), lots of dings/scratches(that way you don't feel bad ruining it), and most of all it has to be 4cyl!

Can I ask why you prefer a 4cyl? Just wondering.
