Speakers in the front doors?

I am about to get new speakers. I know that I can fit some 6.5's in the back...just about any 6.5, but crutchfield says that the front needs shallow mount speakers because of the limited depth. Is this true? Is there a way to mount just about any 6.5 up front? Can I cut the plastic grill out of the door panels to make room for a deeper speaker? Pictures would be great, but any help is appreciated. Thanks.

just pull one of the speakers out and measure it. then look for speakers with the same mounting depth.

I used sony x-plodes (5.25" speakers) and the depth was fine. I'm sure you could find the specs on them somewhere on the internet.

I put some Infinity Reference 6.5" in the front doors. They measure 2 1/16" deep. I even used the factory screws and holes. If you stay with a speaker with approx. 2" of depth or under you will be fine. I know my Infinitys are cutting it close.

Did you use the regular Infinity 6.5 (6012i) or the shallow (6012si)? Did they fit behind the plastic grill of the door? How do they sound and are you running an aftermarket head unit? Are you running the Infinity's in the back too? THANKS.

Well I'm not running 6.5" speakers... but mabye I can help.

I am running Infinity Kappa 52.7i speakers in the front and in the rear. Rear; not such a big deal plenty of room. In the front it took alittle fitment to get them right. Finding a spot for the crossover was also a small issue. I am running these off of the stock Infinity Headunit (no amp) and they sound much better than stock. However, I'm also one of those people that would rather listen to the road and my engine than to music...

I'm running the 6012i. They fit fine as far as I can tell. I have a Blaupunkt Monte Carlo MP34 head unit that puts out 25W RMS x 4ch. They sound pretty good, but I think they would sound better with about 50-60W running to them. I have some 100Hz Bass Blockers to put in when I get my sub and amp installed. When I do that they should sound even better with the sub filling in the lows.
