Something fell off my Jeep
Alright so 2 days ago I was on my way to go snowboarding and one of my friends driving behind me claims something failry big fell from the bottom of my jeep... looked like it spilt into two pieces and "skated" down the road (said it looked like either metal or even possibly plastic. Of course he didnt bother to tell me at the time or get me to pull over and look and only mentioned it after we were already at our destination. Everything runs fine and i dont think it was a piece of the exhaust system as it sounds normal. Anyways yesterday I went through some small puddles that lead into where I work and I travel through on a daily basis... Except for some reason this time when I went through them (and very slowly I might add) there was a large amount of steam coming up from my jeep which isnt normally there. Could the piece that had fallen off been some type of heat shield? If so should I be concerned about it? Also if anyone has any ideas on what else it might have been?

It could have been that rubber splash shield that is in the bottom of the engine bay. I don't think it's neccesary but it helps keep the mud and water out.

Did you pop the hood to make sure the engines still there? If it is then move onto the next step and check to see if the gas tank is still there.

Could have been the heatshield on the muffler. Those rust out before anything else and won't cause a noticeable increase in exhaust noise... Should be easy to see.

Because your fiend said that the piece broke in half when if fell I wouldn't think that it was metal or plastic. When it is cold and the roads are slushy I get road build up on parts of the underside of the jeep. My guess is that it was just a frozen piece of road junk falling off. When I splah into puddles I get some steam, so I dont think that is a problem.

first of all.. Your friend is a butth0le for not tellin you to pull over when he saw that. (what if was a part? and you went sliding/tumbling down the road?
)no-brainer, check under there to see if anything is missing a combonation of dirt/snow covered roads = a brownish/greyish/whitish color. Which is probably why your friend thought it was metal or plastic. Also, "it" hittin the road, splittin and skating.. logically, big object hits hard object = *crack*, and the snowy roads are slick so it skates... If nothin it missin... I'd say what Ryan said... "road junk"

I was thinking this at first too.. that it was simply a buildup of road junk and ice.. however the roads were dry that day and the few days prior to this it was 50+ degrees out and my vehicles in a heated garage at night so I doubt it was any type of ice/slush/snow |
