All the XJs have solid axles right? What exactly does this mean? What is the other kinda axle? How does it bennifit off-roading?

The front and rear axles are solid vs IFS like a Liberty, 05 and new Grand Cheokee etc.

solid Axle means NO IFS or Independent Front Suspension, where the wheels are independent or are not physically connected together like they would be of they were on a Solid Axle.

like the pics in the link show, in a solid Axle when one wheel goes/gets pushed up the other side gets pushed down helping to improve ground contact. IFS = hanging in midair :0.

IFS because it has more "individual" components to move can get hung up and damaged easier.

read and look at this, http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f7/whats-matter-ifs-241328/

IFS VS Solid axle visually explained
