So I removed my oil cap to find this...

Looks likes coolant is getting into the oil , can anyone else confirm this for me?

yup, that's what it looks like to me. if you drain your oil and let it sit it, the water/coolant should separate from the oil. it wouldn't hurt to fill it up with fresh oil and see if it happens again, but my bet is a cracked head and/or blown head gasket.

Have you noticed if you are loosing coolant, or if there is oil in your coolant? I'd check those first and also check compression on each cylinder. You do have an obvious sign of coolant in your oil, but it's not necessarily that.

I've had water condensate to the oil cap a number of times due to weather changes (ie. hot to cold, humidity) or frequent short-term use where the engine warms and then cools down, warms up again..

edit: I noticed you're from Florida, so water condensation can quite certainly be ruled out.

Well I just changed the oil last weekend and yes I am loosing coolant so that basically confirms a cracked head

edit: I have access to several cylinder heads, one is off of a 95 sitting in my garage and the one from my 99

In that case, yes. I see you have an '01 so a cracked head wouldn't surprise me.

Doesn't sound good. The 2001 XJ has the infamous 0331 head, which has a history of cracking.

I would pull the valve cover and look very carefully between cylinders 3-4 (where the casting defect is). A good many people have actually verified and seen the crack(s) in this manner.

Well I finished pulling the head off of my '99 so I am just going to swap it over since it is a 0630 cast number.

Yeah I was going to point out the 01/0331. . I wish I had several heads in MY garage. . .

Dont pour bacon grease into your jeep, it is not an engine lubricant, no matter how good it makes your jeep smell.

Wow, now I know exactly what I don't want to see on my oil cap.

Good luck.

It would be a good idea to throw in some new lifters to while you have the head off. They're cheap and are another of the jeeps notorious weak points.

Yuck, that's nasty. It would be a good idea to throw in some new lifters to while you have the head off. They're cheap and are another of the jeeps notorious weak points. Flush out the oil and coolant as well a FEW times especially the oil before you drive it too much.

I'll try not to sneeze into the oil next time, I promise!

Well I do happen to have a cam that has been laying around for some time, maybe I should just install that puppy in there as well.

Howdy Alex, As you can see, I have an 01 too. Did you overheat the vehicle, or do you know if you did anything out of ordinary. I'm well aware of this flaw, but would like to hear some people analyze what caused it...Thanks

I dont think the '99 head will work... I have read that you will have to switch exhaust, header, computer and wiring.. The '00-'01 have 4 02 sensors...
