Xj smoking ignition

So i went to start my 95 cherokee and noticed i ltte smoked so i turned if off and found that the red and violet wires were burnt. I cut it off where the black stopped and spliced on a new wire. After i hooked it all back up i connect the battery and it makes a ticking noise behind the dash that sounds like the turn signal. The dash lights also flash with the tick. Did i do something wrong?
