Slow Starting

My 1989 Cherokee will start everytime I have gotten in it, but when starting it it turns VERY slow. Is this just the nature of a Cherokee, or is there anything that can be done about it?

I did replace the battery with a new one when I got the Jeep.

Jamie

That seems to be a VERY common complaint for the older model cherokees. I don't recall ever really seeing a fix for it beyond replacing the CPS, but even then I couldn't say for sure that would cure it.

Yes...it is a common problem with the 88-90 xj's with a Renix 4.0L engine...it is caused by a few things that the engineers didnt really think about...The computer will take an oil pressure reading to make sure there is sufficent pressure building up to allow the ngine to start without being "dry" (lack of oil). Thne it will read the CPS and fire up..during all of this the fuel pump will prime the fuel rail and ...Vroom..off you go...but the problem doesnt lie in the battery causing a slow crank..it lies in between the battery and your starter....the fricken wires are 8 guage for both the power and ground, and from the relay it is 18 guage...puny!!
I did a HD upgrade that cost me about $50.00 and it gets alot more power to the starter and all the other components in the system...if you want i can show you how to do it..and depending on how fancy you want your parts to be it can copst as little as $20.00....after the hour it took me to swap, there is no lag in starting, and no long crank times ( Although i have already swapped my fuel pump and CPS)

99XJ - Lifted and whatnot..oh, and its white.

I would be interested in seeing how you fixed yours. Winter is just around the corner, and although I trust my Jeep to start, I always wonder in the back of my mind while it's turning over.

Thanks for any help you can offer!
