Should I drain my transmission fluid? Need opinions

I've been topping off my Transmission fluid with ATF4 for probably over 2 years, it's been shifting smoothly and havnt had a problem yet but I recently saw that we aren't supposed to use atf4, so I was wondering if I should drain all the fluid out and refill it with dex III, or just keep doing what I've been doing. I'm also afraid to drain the fluid out because I've heard it can be bad to do that because all that old fluid helps keep the trans together and it's been common for peoples trans to break soon after they changed the fluid

Would you use the same engine oil for over 2 years ?

Drain and re-fill with Dexron-III/Mercon fluid as called for in the Owners Manual.

Last year when I bought my 97 XJ I changed transmission fluid. I am suspicious it had never been changed. AW4 is pretty tough. Still glad I changed it, have had nothing break due to changing and will change more regularly so long as I own it.

The original fluid is not magical, it can not keep your transmission together, drain fluid and refill according to specs.

Complete myth. This would be like saying "If you never change your engine oil, the engine will last forever." And if you've been adding trans fluid, it means the tranny has a leak. Fix it.
