Should i build it up or just get a new one?
Ok so heres my dilema i just cant decide, ive got a 92 XJ limited with a 4.0 high output and its got 190k miles on it. I really want to build it up with a lift, tires rims etc etc etc however im afraid that with as many miles as its got that the stress of a lift and tires is gonna blow the tranny or transfer case or an axle or somethin. The motor runs good and the transmission shifts good and locks up good but occasionally when im wheelin it now the t-case will pop out of 4wd into neutral and when i got the jeep i checked the transfer case fluid and there wasnt any in it so i think it could be fried. another thing is when i give it gas and im turning itll will like surge almost like the trans is slipping or something but only when im turning i think it could be the rear diff but i dunno. So basically im wondering what would you do?? build this one up and maybe have the parts that have problems rebuilt like the t-case or just get a xj with less miles on it and start with that. Your input is much appreciated

190k miles isn't really that much. Many people build up their XJs with a lot of mileage on them. It's also hard to find an older vehicle like that with low miles without emptying your wallet. So I say go for it. If you don't know when all the fluids were changed, you should probably drain and refill everything (tranny, xfer case, front and rear diffs). Fill up the transfer case and see if there's any obvious leaks or cracks in the casing.

when you give it gas and the surge happens it is probably an easy fix. I had the same problem and thought tranny was dieing.
All i did was put in new spark plugs, wires, and distrib cap and rotor. And walla, hasnt done it sence. |

Personally, I'd keep it. As mentioned, drain everything and inspect the fluid for shavings and or a silvery tint to it.
A new TC can be had fairly cheap. If it's a auto trans, just change the filter and fluid with DextronIII/Mercon fluid and then continue to drain and refill for a couple of weeks. With that many miles, I wouldn't "Power flush" it. The surge could be a couple of things. You should be able to "Feel" it in the trans if it's slipping. If it feels slugish then it could be the fuel pump. Does it do this all the time or just when the tank is at about 1/4 full?

My advice would be to be careful on this one. Not to trade the monster you know for one you don't. You know how your current truck has been driven and taken care of and what work has been put into it. It would stink to trade it for one that has 60k miles on it but was in Louisiana not too long ago, or has been driven and severely abused. I have seen these trucks with near 300k miles on them, so just keep that in mind with your decision. As for the transfer case, make sure you check your linkage. Mine has slopped out on me a couple of times and given me the effect you are talking about. Also a motor or tranny mount could cause your shift linkage to kick out. One side of the linkage is mounted to the T case and the other side to the body. It doesn't take a lot of movement to cause some grief. Not saying that's what is going on with yours, but you should check it.

i can almost gaurantee that the transfercase popping out of gear is from linkage that needs adjustment.
