I believe all 4.0s like to run @ 210. That temp assures optimum efficiency and performance. It seems like some fans (and correct me if I'm wrong) kick in at a higher temps. My point is that you actually do have more of a safety cushion than you think. I see it as a good thing that mine pops on @ 212 or so. Helps keep things cool in city traffic.

I can just hear mine over my exhaust and intake, not enough to make me nuts but just enough to know its there. Ive never heard it come on without the ac or defrost the 3 row radiator also makes the temp needle rock steady no matter what im doing. Idling intraffic with the ac on in summer it just goes a hair over 210, itsusually a hair under 210.

I like it.

Your exactly right in what you said (I sometime say either as I watch US films / shows non-stop but the majority say what you described)

Im glad it comes on early like you said, but id just like it a tad quieter.
For the people who have swapped over their viscous fan for an other elec fan...
Which fan have you got and
How quiet is it in comparision to the above.

Thanks for everyones answers

Yes, it will be loud (maybe it shouldn't be, but that's something else). Also, the way the fan works is it should cycle on and off when the vents are set to the windshield or windshield/floor combo. The fan actually isn't supposed to come on (without the AC/vents bit just described) unless the temp. reaches 218*. It will then shut off at 209*.
The exact temp. depends on the year. What's above is for a '99, IIRC. A '98 is 217*/208*.

You would need to fab a pretty large fan in there to not be able to hear it. Due to the small size of the fan blades, surface area, and ammount of air moving through, you are going to hear the air moving quite a bit with that size fan. There isn't much you can do to get around it without removing the mechanical fan and starting to fab an all electric setup.

my gauge will sit at 210'F permanently unless stuck and NOT moving in traffic. That's with a manual transmission. The fan will come on very loud with a/c use or the eventual stuck in traffic hot idle. Comes on around 220 or so, shuts off at 209'F per the manual. However....if creeping in idle and the air can move around the primary fan, then it will cool down rapidly.

for those of you with auto trans, then yes, unless you have an external trans cooler, then your electric "booster" cooling fan will come on a lot more, etc.

the xj has a small radiator for a rather large 4.0L motor, be advised that clean fresh coolant, no more thant 50/50 mix, and good quality 185'F (mopar performance part) or stock 195'F thermostat will do the job.

the xj is designed to run at 210'F for low emissions, long oil life, good gas mileage, and low engine wear. too much beyond either side of that temp can get you into other problems.

most xj's will do fine with the mopar 185'F thermostat, but stick with 5w-30 or 10-30w oil. the 10-40 and 20-50 is wayyyyy too thick at that cooler running motor. be advised that in heavy traffic, that thermostat will be wide open and what you really have is a lack of cooling capacity, and not a "thermostat" restriction issue.

My '97 is just the same. It's my first car, and no one in my family had owned a jeep before...my mom thought it seemed very loud so we took it by the dealership we bought it at and had it checked out. Turned out to be normal, as others here have said!

It doesn't bother me at all. Of course I usually play music pretty loud.
