Nice....I've been holding off changing my rear shocks because of the fear of shearing off those upper bolts...with this method it looks like an easy fix.

Just used this write up. I have an air chisel and that makes it FAST. BREAK the bolts, air chisel, done. Couldn't have gone better.
Well done write up. |

Just did this last weekend on wife's xj, I used the biggest phillips screw driver in my tool box and big hammer, just try to hit the nut in one side or edge, this is much easier than hit it dead center.

Used multiple air chisels and couldn't get it to work. Had to cut and drill in the floor.

Just did this!
I bought some JK Rubi shocks off eBay about 6 months ago, with the intent of throwing them on a month after I got them. Well they sat in my storage room until this evening. Finally pulled them out, went down to the Base's Auto Club and went to town on them. I thought that even with an air chisel running off a 100 psi line that it would take a few minutes per weld-nut to break them free. Took about 10 seconds of hammering per bolt. I was damn impressed. I'm pretty happy ![]()

yah it took me longer to get out the air chisel and charge the compressor than it did to knock the old nuts off the mount point.

i've done this on 3 xjs now, i couldn't image cutting a hole in the floor. it's a little tricky fishing the bolts in there, but all in all not bad.

Had to drive 50min round trip to get my air hammer. Took less than 2min to to crawl under the car and knock out the nuts. Spent the next 1-2 hours fishing the bolts and tightening them. Took forever to figure out the best way to get/keep the wrench on on the bolt. The second shock didn't take as long. Wish I had seen this thread before I started drilling the old bolts out.

Am I the only one that couldn't knock it out with an air chisel?

2nd bolt: Snapped. But air hammer worked pretty good! 3rd bolt: Bolt did not snap! I was so happy. I may have started singing a little. 4th bolt: Snapped half way out..SON OF A..!..Luckily air hammer worked after awhile. Tip: Sometimes the welded nut will hinge and fold over in the access area, without coming off completely. If it hinges on the side where you are fishing from, it will interfere with dropping your bolt down. So think about this when picking a spot to start wacking or drilling.

I can't tell you how many times I drilled and tapped the bolts and broke them off while driving or when replacing the shocks again. Finally I learned about the method of dropping in some new bolts through the cross member. A punch and hammer is all it took for mine. Used a long needle nose to drop the bolts in.
For some unknown reason I've broken off the 5/16" bolts while driving so I would recommend an upgrade to some bigger bolts. Can't remember if I had to drill the hole bigger or not after knocking out the nuts. I think it was 7/16" that fit through the end of my shock. |

Thanks so much for this thread. After the first bolt snapped I headed straight to the forum. Worked like a charm. Only took a couple of seconds with the the air hammer. Fished in the new bolts and done. Worst part of the whole thing for me was all the rust and crap that rained down on me when using the air hammer. But I was still grinning. Saved so much time. Thanks again!
