i did the sandwiching thing same as 99 did year and a half ago. took 45 mins and with 35,000 miles it still is the same with no adverse effect on structural integrity. i didn't however include the carpeting as part off the deal. used stainless hardware so if the jeep is 45 years old and has 150,000,000 miles on it the nuts will still thread off.

Excellent instructions. The prior owner of our Cherokee snapped off the bolts so they welded the top mounts. Lucky for me they were only tacked on. First I broke the welds with an air chisel and flat blade, then drove out the welded nuts with the pointed tip. I also used 1 inch bolts to add a little extra length. I then fed a small stiff wire thru the bolt hole and out the access hole and wrapped it around the threads and slowly pulled it thru. When tightened, about 1/4 inch of the bolt was sticking out. I also used antiseize compound on the upper and lower bolts.

I would like to do something similar as x99j's setup, but I will be using Monroe Max-Air MA765 air shocks. These are needed to support the 300-400 pounds of sand/salt mixture I keep in the back of XJ during winter snowplowing adventures. I like the idea of spreading out the shock load over a larger area than just the upper shock mount.

x99j what size bolts did you use for your installation?, How does one know where the bolts will end up in the interior? (drill up from underneath?) Pictures?

Thanks,

Fran

I just used your method today and it took about 5 minutes to get all four bolts out. Thanks for the suggestion. Made the job about 100 times easier.

I'm doing this on Tuesday (assuming that my QT order gets here on time). I do have one question though... I'm going to buy a cheap air hammer at Lowes tomorrow. The website says "comes with chisels" but I want to make sure that I have the right one. If I have to buy another chisel I will, but what type should I be looking for?

you want the tip that looks like a pencil. it won't come to a point that can puncture skin, but you get the idea. you don't want the one that is flat like a wood sculpting chisel.

Exactly, I used BPE's and never have to mess with them again.
Although the first time this happened, I did the drill and tap method. (in '02)

thanks everyone... i know I didn't post the answer to the way I did it... but it was the 2 # sledge and punch... worked beautifully... dropped bolts in with no prob with diesel grade antisieze... i will probably do the BPE on the next time... which won't be long... I am planning to turn the 2WD into a 4WD

I blew the nuts out with an air hammer and dropped the bolt down from the top. It makes it a bit easyer to start the nutz...Rob

The very first job I did week one when I got my XJ.... all 4 shocks.

The very first thing I did, snapped a bolt. *sigh

So yeah, I think to myself, uh oh, what have I gotten myself into?

Had no air tools or any easy outs or the like. I even soaked them in penetrating oil 4 times before I tried. Bad design.

All in now, new stainless hardware. I am however going to go the BPE route when I lift it and put in the new shocks, what a brilliant idea and cheap too.

It is the little things in life!

Great Thread!!
