Settle a bet!!!

Okay guys, me and my father have been back and forth to each other about how I warm my jeeps up to 100 degrees before I drive them anywhere. According to him a vehicle should not idle at all and should be driven right away albeit a little slower than normal. I firmly believe in letting the valves seat properly before driving the 4.0 I6. Both my jeeps have 180,000 miles and I have been doing this practice since I bought them and have never had an issue. So I ask, how many of you let your jeep warm up before driving???

Start mine up and let it run a few seconds... and then I am off. Never have let one "warm up" before driving it. The engine is a purely mechanical beast. It does not "know" if it is moving a vehicle or not. As long as it has oil pressure, it is good to go.

Most definitely warm it up! I think the fluids need to run for a few minutes prior to driving it away...it's one thing if you have already been driving it...whole different deal if it has sat for awhile.
Both of my XJ's had over 200 K on them...so I guess it worked for me

Now, if I could only get my wife to do the same.....

Def good to warm it up, I try to on all my engines get them up to operating temp before putting a load on the engine the big rigs do this and have done this for years. I alway's warm my race quad up berfore tuning or racing. I've put over 200k on all my jeeps and have yet to blow up a motor (yet).

Well... everybody FEELS better about warming up their rigs, but there is exactly zero scientific evidence that it has any effect on the longevity of an engine. The engine may run more efficiently at operating temperature but it has no bearing on anything mechanical.

No harm will come from warming up if that's what you want to do. I'll be the guy a few miles down the road...

Normally I only warm it up when it is winter. Hard to see out of a windshield when it is iced over

As long as the oil pressure is tip-top your good to go. I'll give mine a minute or two, just to let the idle calm down, but other than that I'm off.

In the summer I'm off in like 2min. But since its been getting colder i like for it to be at temp. Also I might add that along with most I have the "Chatter" that goes away once at temp, Thats why I generally give it a few mins.

Anytime it starts getting cold outside I like to let mine run for at least 1 min. When its really cold outside (30 or below) I usually let it warm up for a full 10mins before I leave in the morning.

If for some reason I don't have time to let it warm up I take it very slow.

It doesn't care if it's under a load?? As in the pushrods and the other steel in an engine- don't expand when hot and affect bearings/seals etc. Are they not engineered to run at operating temp, I don't really think you'll cause much harm not warming up but I strongly believe you will add life by doing so, and thought that was the purpose of the post.

I only warmed up vehicles like that if they tended to stall out when they were cold. My '72 El Camino, for instance. It was either let it warm up fully or brake with the left foot and massage the throttle with my right at every light for 10 minutes.
