Serp Belt

Uh, I hate to be a pain and sound like a noob...

But there isn't a listing in the FAQ for serp belt swap for anything above a 95. My Jeep is a 00 and i'm major difficulty wrapping my brain around just how i'm supposed to get it off without crushing my hand or talking the power sttering pump off.

loosen the 2 bolts that hold the power steering pump on(so you can move it back and forth) then loosen the tensioner bolt(its under the power steering pump.....pretty long bolt. loosen that til you can pop the belt off....and the routing for the new belt should be on your fan shroud...if not heres the routing for a 98 XJ http://autorepair.about.com/library/...bl512a-lib.htm

if thats the same as yours

hope that helps

Yeah the routing is on there and i see the long bolt (it's already pretty loose) I just thought i'd have to loosen the idler itself.

Nope, don't touch the PS bolts. On later models, there's just two bolts. You are correct - you loosen the idler pulley bolt first. Here's my picture once again...

It just take a ridiculous amount of turns to loosen the tensioner enough. Air tools are the only easy way.

nm guess it's different for the newer ones.

IIRC, it is 15 mm. And you don't have to loosen it very much. It's easy with a ratcheting box wrench.

ya i dont remember it taking a long time at all, loosen the pully a bit then start loosening the tensioner takes 10-15 minutes max. its a very easy job.

I just put a Goodyear Gator on last night. I found it easier to pull the electric fan first. It's only a couple of 9/16 screws on my '96. Gives you more space to fit a socket (15mm) on the idler.

I'll add this thread to the Tech/FAQ and we will now have the serp belt loosen/tighten covered.

I modified a 15mm wrench so the box end was flat instead of angled like most are, and it makes it much easier so I don't have to pull the fan. Phil
