I've got a 2001 Cherokee sport i have the hex type also I just changed mine on Sunday I couldn't break them loose with a regular ratchet i used a breaker bar Loosened right up just make sure not to overtighten when you put them back in. I used Dextron III

What I worried about is breaking the tcase mounts since it was flexing a little bit as a pushed on the hex key to loosen it.

I'm going to be using Valvoline Full-Synthetic ATF+4
