Runs rough after puddles
When I go through deep puddles (having fun of course), jeep will run rough.
Afterward when it idles it sounds like a cylinder is not firing, and still stays rough until I give it enough gas to get over about 2k rpm then nice and smooth. After an half an hour of "dry" driving the problem goes away. I guessing I am sucking water into something, and after it everperates away all is good, but I am not sure where I am sucking the water into. Any ideas?

Change the cap, rotor, and plug wires. And try not use your jeep as a submarine.

i had the same problem on my 89, found the connector on the wire leading to the coil to be the culprit. Mine actually died though, Lost it in a "puddle" for almost a day, after borrowing a canoe, a tow strap, and a truck i got it out. Wasn't hydrolocked but wouldn't run. Let it dry ~6 hours and it was fine. silicone and dielectric grease are your buddies.

could it be the altenator? if it locks the clutch up then it would make the engine work harder to turn it.

I've heard wet O2 sensors can also cause problems, but never experienced it myself.

Probably you're sucking some water into the intake, and it kinda sits in the bottom of the airbox until it all gets sucked in and blown through the engine. get a snorkel if youre going to be runnin through water

you probably got your distributor and/or alternator wet. the alternator is mounted very low on the engine. once it (they) dry out, it runs fine again. slow down in the puddles and you'll be fine.

Pop the dist cap off and spray it down with WD40. Shake it out and reinstall it.
Water + bad idle usually = water in the dist.

as far as the clutch thing goes, the only thing like that under your hood that has a clutch is the ac compressor, and the fan has a thermal clutch. |

We dont know if the belt was already loose or if the altenator was going out so it could be that but is mor likely what Balloo said.

On a dry day take off the cap and use a small bead of silicone around it, and unplug the electrical plugs going to the distributer and use a little electrical grease in the connections, but most likely it is your Distributer cap or water in the airbox getting sucked into the intake.
If you plan on playing in the water alot I would look up a home made snorkle, for a couple of bucks you can save your motor.

I wouldn't silicone the dist base. If there is water getting in the best way to deal with that is a new dist cap.
