its pretty simple honestly.. problems you will run into are first the freon is gonna be let out into the air and its a problem for some and i wouldn't announce if i was doin it... the actual mounting and unmounting is fairly easy tho. i didn't have the problem of letting freon out Cuz it was empty..

anyway not meaning to hijack but does anyone know how much it would cost to vacuum and fill my a/c system??

For what a shop would charge, you could probably buy a vacuum pump and set of gauges.

Don't forget that tools purchased have residual value, unlike money handed over to a shop.

I bought one of these recently at a garage sale for $50. And it came with a recovery machine and tank!!!

How would one evac the system if they were to do it themselves? Hypothetically speaking of course.

Uhh....I don't think so. I vacuum pump of the quality used for AC systems is $200+. Decent guages are going set you back at least $75.

Are you saying you think a shop will charge more than $275 to evacuate and charge an AC system that's in good working order? That's seems doubtful....

If residual value is taken into account, the question becomes more like "Do you think you can find a shop to do the job for under $50?"

You do bring up a good point, in that one can find these types of specialty tools (used) on eBay at decent prices.

Heck if I am gonna buy those kinds of tools (and I have already), I am not going to think about residual value, as I will use them repeatedly for the rest of my life.

I suspect most guys on this forum (1) don't know what to look for on eBay, and (2) don't know how to use it even if they find it at a good price. For them, paying a shop to do that specialty work is probably the best bet.
