Buddy of mine said he had the same '96 XJ 4.0 as me and suggested I should go ahead and pro-actively replace my crank sensor as his went bad. I've had mine 10 years now from 88,000 mi when I got her til 170,000 miles now.
Should I go ahead and replace the crank sensor? Seems like a fairly inexpensive piece and I'm guessing it won't have to be replaced again.
Pros:
1. You'll control the timing of its replacement - instead of being stranded
2. You can do the job at your leisure, and on a nice day (not at 1am in the morning, in February, because you have to get to work in the morning).
3. If some behavior changes or there is a problem right after the replacement, you'll have good confidence that it is directly related to the new part, instead of having to diagnose from scratch.
Cons:
1. You leave the additional miles (value) that the existing part would have given you on the table. (but if you break this down by part cost per/mile, you aren't really losing much).
I have a 96, and I am in the same boat. I intend to proactively replace some of these sensors.
Crank sensor brands vary VASTLY in terms of longevity. I had an autozone one last < 9 months for example. The only ones you can really depend on are MOPAR and they're not as cheap or easy to find.
You want to order a new one now and have it on hand? Absolutely, great idea. You want to replace a known good MOPAR one with an inexpensive reproduction part? aw hell nah.
To be clear. When I say YES, I mean with MOPAR sensors. Not cheap aftermarket types. If you are thinking of using an inexpensive aftermarket CPS sensor, I would wait for the MOPAR sensor to fail first.
