rear disc brakes

Ok everyone, i went to the pick and pull today. I found a 1995 grand cherokee and I pulled everything off the rear that I need to put disc brakes on my XJ. I got the calipers, rotors, backing plates and the rubber brake lines. All for 49 bucks. The brake shoes even look like brand new.
So, now who's going to help put these bad boys on?? huh? huh?
I can't wait to put them on, but at the same time, I don't want to mess things up. Later!

If you go to this page:

http://stu-offroad.com/suspension/d44brake/bc-1.htm

it will explain all the details of how to do the swap. Just ignore the parts where it talks about a new bearing retainer plate, as that only applies to D44 axles, which you probably do not have, unless you put one on your Jeep previously.

Do a search, at last count there were about 9 good write ups and about 354 good threads on this subject.... Its a pretty easy swap, great score to get it all for under $50, if you could pull um at the Pick and Pull, I am surprised you even need a write up. The only thing I remember was different on my install was to make the backing plates axle holes a bit bigger. IIRC everything else was plug and play. Good Luck,

Easiest swap I ever did on my XJ, just need to grind out the caliper bracket holes till they fit everything else is easy.

I'm in a town called Shamokin. I probably don't need a writeup to do this, but I like to be ready for anything that might pop up. I'm hoping this is as good a mod as everyone says it is, cuz my brakes suck!

Go back to the yard and get the proportioning valve.

Not totally necessary. You can modify the existing XJ prop. valve to achieve a suitable balance. It involves opening up the rear balance spring compartment, and removing the rubber piston cup from the spring-loaded piston, and then reassembling (and bleeding) the system.

Do a search over on NAXJA or Jeeps Unlimited, and there are pics on how this is done.

The Tech/FAQ has a couple of links that walk through the install. Nice score on the setup, around here that would run you about $150 easy.

I figure, I'm just going to put them on and not mess with the proportioning valve right away. I'll see how that works out, and if I need to, then I will address the valve.
Yeah the pick and pull here is great. It's about an hour drive, but worth every minute of it. I will go there sometimes, just to browse. I was going to pull the front coils off the same grand cherokee that I pulled the brakes from because it had a V8 in it. But I think when I lift it, I will just buy the proper size coils I need and do it right.
If you are interested, the site for the pick and pull I go to is www.wegotused.com
I go to the Hazelton one. They are very hard to beat.

Do you know what rear end was on that ZJ? If it was an D44A, then the swap is really easy (as mine was), since the axle tube diameter is just a wee bit smaller than on the 8.25. So not much grinding is necessary to enlarge the backing plate holes.

If the ZJ had a D35, then much more grinding is needed since the D35 had small axle tubes. Since you said the ZJ had a V8, chances are good that it had the aluminum D44.

But either way, it's an easy swap. And well worth it.

I never even thought about that. I didn't really pay attention to the axle. But if it makes a difference, I did have to take out the C clips to remove the shafts. Does the 44 have c clips? I just hope it's a worth while mod. Eventually I want to run 33's on the Jeep. But I think it's a good idea to start with the brake upgrade since bigger tires will be harder to stop.

Yes, the aluminum D44 has c-clips. A regular D44 does not.

The 8.25 has 3-inch axle tubes. You can measure the diameter of the holes in the backing plates. Then you'll have an idea of how much grinding you'll have to do.

Just measured the hole. It's almost exactly 2.75 inch. So it must have been a 35.

I thought the D35 was like 2.6", or something like that. So it must've been a D44A.

You'll just have to enlarge the holes by 1/8". That's not too bad.
