You can look at the axle itself and it will be stamped with what it is, i just found out yesterday mine was the CD 8 1/4" as i was taking off the sway bar. ABS = D35, no ABS = CD 8.25"

Not always true. Some of the earlier XJ's had D35's without ABS. Best way to tell is just to look. Here is a picture to compare the two. The left is the 8.25 (notice the round cover and the housing is flat at the bottom) and the right is the D35 (oval cover and housing).

The 27 spline 8.25 is barely better, but still pretty weak. The 29 spline 8.25 is quite a bit stronger and is almost comparable to the Dana 44.

29 spline if 8.25. If it is an 8.25, 97 and newer XJ's had the 29 spline axle, and the later production 96's had the 29 spline. If you have a 96, you'll probably have to pull the shafts to find out if you have the 27 or 29 spline if you have the 8.25.

Interesting. I'm gonna seal the deal on the '96 Cherokee Sport tomorrow. I took one last look earlier this evening to try and figure out which axle it's equipped with. The housing is flat on the bottom, so I've got the Chrysler!

But this is the first time I've heard about the late 96's having the 29 spline. Is there any other way for me to figure out which I've got without pulling the shafts? It's a 2 DR, 5 Speed, if that means anything.
