Random Stall and Won't Restart?

Im having problems with the girls 99 XJ 4.0 Auto. It will randomly stall out and then sometimes it will restart right away on its own other times I have to stop and restart it which is a pain but it only did this like 4 times in two weeks. All the accessories work fine the engine just stalls out. Then today it wouldn't restart after it stalled. It turns over but doesn't fire. Then after 30 mins of just sitting it fired right up and I drove it home and the check engine light popped and it was the code for the TPS so I replaced it and light went away. I thought it was fixed till it happened again the next day and wouldn't restart for almost two hours but no check engine light. Sorry for the novel but want to get all the details. Any ideas? Thanks guys

It's the crank sensor!

x2 on the crankshaft position sensor. Yours may be starting to go south. Without that critical input from the crank sensor to the computer, you will not have fuel or spark to the engine.

It sounds like your sensor could be "thermally sensitive" meaning that it fails more when exposed to engine heat. If that is the case, testing it in the garage may not be an effective way to troubleshoot it as it could test in acceptable resistance limits when cold. If your problem continues and you don't stumble onto any other cause, you may just want to fork out for one. They're a bit tricky to install, use the SEARCH function for more information on it and some tricks to help in a successful install.

It's possible that it is the ignition coil or some other piece of hardware failing too, but IMHO, the crankshaft position sensor is the most common sensor failure on the Jeep 4.0

Good luck and post back what you find!

Without "data", all you have is an opinion!
