Question About Using Jeep Liberty Flip Fobs for XJ's

I would love to consolidate my Jeep key and fob into one piece. A quick search for ideas turned up the Jeep Liberty fob which has the same FCC number as my Cherokee fob. I assume that they are electronically interchangeable.

Does anyone know how different the keys are, though? Are they difficult to swap out for an XJ blank? Obviously, I would have some serious Dremel work to do on the blank, but could an XJ key be made to fit?

Has anyone done this mod?

you can have it done by an automotive place that installs stuff like remote door locks

To clarify, my XJ already has a keyless entry system with the standard Chrysler fob. I was wondering if I could chop a key copy and fit it to a Jeep Liberty Flip Fob.

Actually, my XJ doesn't have any chip in the key.

I know that for a fact because the key I use every day is a $1.50 copy from Walmart.

Yes. Jeep Cherokee 4WD Sport 2000. As I understand, Chrysler implemented the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) in 1998 in some vehicles, but not all. I think it is now standard, but it wasn't then.

well i guess you can modify one. take out the electronic stuff from the flip fob and replace it with the stuff u want. it might take a little effort and time, but if you do do it please post lots of pictures this is a great idea!

If it were my project....I would make sure the remote would work first thing.

Then I would remove the key from the flip, cut the blank off, then cut a key for your jeep and whack the head off of it.

Then take it to someone who can braze the two together.

Good idea! It could be very frustrating...

I wonder if the blank on the flip fob is the same type as the blank for the Cherokee XJ...

My wife's 2002 WJ has a chip in the key, my 2000 XJ key does not have a chip. My wife's WJ key will unlock my glove box, but will not start my Jeep.

I would be willing to bet you could either dremel the Liberty key to fit the XJ or get the XJ's locks re-keyed to the KJ's.
