Question about rear end swap!

OK... I know I'm gonna sound like a total noob here but I have a '92 XJ 4x4 and a '96 XJ 4x2 (Wrecked). Will the rear end from the '96 4x2 swap into the '92 4x4? And if not... what would be the problems? I have plans for later but I just need to get it on the road for work transportation at the moment, no wheeling. Thanks in advance for any help, I've had some mechanics look at it and I feel like they are trying to give me the shaft.

Yes it will bolt right in. You need to make sure both axles have the same gear ratio to be able to use 4wd though. And if they are different axles you may need to swap the driveshaft also.

it should swap right in just look at the mounting of both of them only thing you need to worry about is the gear ratio i know that they have a couple different ratios for the jeeps there is the 3.07 ratio and the 3.55 ratio the 3.07 mostly came in the 5 speeds and the 3.55 in the auto but if there the same ratios you should be able to just bolt it in

they are both automatic... how do i find the gear ratio?

If they are both 4.0L auto's the gearing should be the same. Both should be 3:55's, you can pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear to determine the ratio.

and there should also be little tabs on the diff cover if they have not been removed

that was actually my next question. the mechanics told me that the tags need to match up in order for the rear ends to be swapped out? is there any truth to this and what should the tags have on them to be able to tell. I can tell you that the tags on the '96 are (top)1706, (bottom)35, is there something missing from these tags? I don't have the tags from the '92 available at the moment.

not necessarily the 35 usually means its the 3.55 ratio atleast thats how we figured out the ratios at my old work which was a junk yard
