Project $500 Cherokee

Hello folks.

Purchasing a 1996 Cherokee 4dr Inline 6 Cyl, auto matic, 4x4. Needs either a alternator or a starter. The guy doesn't know.. So he is selling it to me for $500, it has 184.xxxx on the clock. it has some slight front passenger side damage to the bumper, fender, headlight bezel/mount.

Not sure of the T-case, or axles just yet.. Going to look at it this saturday hand over the cash, and tow it home.. i'll get more pictures then

It does, Just needs an alternator or starter, But from the highre resilution picture he sent of the engine, the battery terminals look terribly correded.

I also have a question, since the front is damaged like that, Should I look for major tweeks/cracks/damage in the frame/bodyline?

Also, what else should I look for? I know this is the transition year before the diffrent body style and what not.....

just check to see if the bodys straight, doors shut right, etc. Heck on carfax it said mine "turned over" and minimal damage reported and you cant tell at all.

The 8.25 axle is better than the dana 35 which also came in cherokees. The newer version of the 8.25 is a 29 spline which came around in 1996? **correct me if im wrong** Ive heard good things about the 8.25 axle in general, both 27 and 29 splines, so you should be just fine. Let us know how the rest of that turns out.

Awesome.. I really didn't like the D35 that was in my Comanche.. It constely went out... So i just stopped replacing things... I roared loudly between the last of 4th gear.. and most of 5th gear.

If it's a later year build it could have 29spline axle shafts. Pull 'em and count 'em.

Sounds like a good deal regardless of it it runs or not.

Yea.. FOR REAL! It's ALL I've wanted (and them some) Since I sold my MJ.. I loved that damn thing to death, even though it was 2WD... I LOVED having the inline 6.. I love that engine to death, Not only is it VERY Realible, it also sounds like deisel (well, to me...I'm geek like that) it's automatic.. and 4 WHEEL FRICKIN DRIVE. Which is a ++++++

I have a question, depending on what Tcase it has.. I will be towing it with a tow dolley, how do I go about getting it in N if i can't move it? I know it HAS to be moving to get it past 4HFT if it's the 242.

8.25" are as strong as a Dana 44. just geard different.......i believe the 29 spline count came out in 98? i'm most positive the 96 has the 27 spline count on it.

if you are using a dolly on the rear wheels be sure to read the owners manual... steering column must unlock (key in off position) and a steering wheel clamping device for towing used or the steering column lock can break.

if the TC is jammed (said you can't get it in neutral) if it is on dollys seems to me it shouldn't matter whether it is neutral or not... none of the wheels will be turning.
