previous explorer owner, buying 93 cherokee, what to look for?

I am a previous owner of a ford explorer, nice to finally say previous. Anyways new to cherokee's, I have agreed upon buying a used cherokee 1993. One owner who has a file folder 2 inches thick on the service records, original bill of sale and has Krown rustproofing receipts since purchase. Current mileage on the jeep is 210000Km. It is a 5 speed with the full size spare on a rear holder that swings out. I looked underneath and it is solid, with no leaks anywhere. Tires are new, new battery, engine bay also very clean.

What can I expect to be looking for as far as initial concerns on this apparently great used vehicle. I owned an 88 about 12 years, and this one seems pretty much the same but I'm sure that jeep made some changes somewhere along the way. The engine says its a high output, which makes me think its the same motor with a few minor changes? MPI for one by the looks of it.

Thanks.

I too am a previous Exploder owner, and I haven't looked back. While I have a newer Cherokee, I can tell you that it will easily out perform the exploder off road. Mileage will probably not be quite as good. As far as problems to expect, I don't know. Mine's a 2000 and I've had 0 problems so far. 210000KM is only like 130000 miles, so It's probably got lots of life left. I've seen many threads with info from people who have well over 200000 miles (322000KM).

Have Fun!

Thanks.
Quoting Dino Savva: "In 1991 engines received Chrysler sequential MPFI, a larger 60mm throttle body, revised intake and exhaust manifolds, and a more efficient high port cylinder head. As a result, these engines produced 13hp more than their predecessors and gained the "High Output" designation." Dino's webpage is here

I would expect the main concern to be rust, at that age & in your climate, but you've already found it to be clean, so it sounds like you found a great Jeep. Have you seen any leaks? There are a number of leaks common to all XJs, incl the valve cover (an easy fix), rear main seal, oil pan gasket -- also check the air filter for oil contamination (blow-by) which would indicate a PCV or vacuum problem. If you haven't already, you'll want to check the condition of simple tune-up items like spark plugs/wires (Champion Truck Plugs [Champion Part Number 4412] are often recommended), distributor cap & rotor, fuel filter, maybe clean the throttlebody, etc.

There were a few changes between '88 & '93 (other than the HO engine), some were actually changes for the worse (they stopped casting the engine block as nickel/iron alloy in '90, just iron in '91 on, so a '93 engine is more prone to warpage). But it should last a long time with care, & it'll be good to have FI. I'm trying, but I actually can't remember the significant changes (sorry). I guess most of them were electronic (different main computer, some different sensors).

Other than all that, you'll want to consider what mods (modifications) you want to make (if any). Is this 2WD or 4WD we're talking about? And do you intend to take it off-road, do you want to lift it, do you want to add power, & are there any aftermarket parts you'd like information on?

If it's 4wd, I can vouch for the 231 Command Trac (part time only) system as being amazing. Look for your rear axle, if it's got the chrysler 8.25 (flat bottom) you're a step up, the dana 35 (oval cover) is a bit weak.

Mine has 157K on the clock, no problems at all. Give it a tuneup, it'll probably need it. Other than that mine has been trouble free.
