power steering problem

I got no answers in the general jeep discussion area so I'll ask it here...

Yes I used search function but did not find answer......

Cherokee is a daily driver with 168,000 highway miles. It has been babied.

Here's the problem ... happens a couple of times a month: after about 40 miles at 60 MPH on a highway we slow to make a right turn onto a side road and power steering goes super stiff a few seconds, making it really hard to make the turn. I've siphoned out the old fluid, replaced with new fluid, no change in symptom. Belt is OK and pump makes no noise at all. No leaks. Steering stabilizer shows a little oil leak. Other than these "moments" the power steering is fine. This is an intermittent problem, always after 45 minutes of highway travel, then as we turn off to the right. It happens about every tenth time we make these turns off the highway onto our side road. Never had it do it in city driving or any left turns (but we dont make left turns off the highway, so that has never been tested). Both myself and my wife have experienced this a few times. It has been doing this about six months on and off. Slow parking lot steering is never a problem.

Is the pump going bad or is the steering box going bad?

Was hoping that someone has had similar symptoms before I start throwing parts at it. Oh, no steering related parts have ever been replaced. We have owned it since mile 1. I'm ready to buy a new pump for it, but was hoping for comment as to the fix.

This just happened to me! Not cool. Anyone else have this issue that knows a solution?

I am guessing the issue is in the spool valve inside the steering gear itself. The fix, of course, is new/reman/used replacement steering gearbox.
