Popping sound

My XJ has had a steadily increasing popping sound coming from under the front end during acceleration. It was doing it a little when i first got it at around 98k miles but it seems to have gotten worse over the past 10k miles. I've looked under it and found nothing loose or broken. Anyone have an idea of what it could be?

Does your steering wheel jerk back and forth when turning? This is a sign of bad u-joints. I had many experiences with popping when turning and the wheel jerking on it's own and it was always teh u-joints. Mud seizes up joints pretty well.

No the steering wheel doesn't jerk or have any play in it at all. It mostly only makes the sound when i'm accelerating or going over a rough road.
