Poor man's Cowl intake
I wanted to do a Cowl cold air set up like the one the white XJ featured in Eric's book. The only problem was the up front cost of the cold air kit, I really didn't want to spend $200 on something that either might not work or would need modification. So I went to Autozone bought their $40 one-size-fits-all air tube and some other parts. Anyway heres what I used from the intake manifold back.
-Stock rubber intake tube -3" exhaust tube -$40 intake tube -cheap-o plastic 90* intake fitting (Didn't want to use in engine bay) -4" diameter Filter for 4 brl. carb. (found K&N filter skinny enough soon to be added) -I cut the plasic over the cowl on the driver side and caulked it on the passenger. Drove thru Gustov without a problem. I have had this on the jeep for almost a month now, I can feel the throtle response and a few hp. The big gain has been the 30-50 more miles out of each tank of gas. And yes it's loud, and my suspension rides like a stage coach, I drive the jeep 136 miles a day and love every minute, It's a JEEP it's suposed to be loud and bumpy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh and i instaled my hurst shifter the same weekend. That was a fun test drive. ![]()

It has all the benifits of all the other cold air kits but this one is pulling colder air (from cowl not engine compartment). It also works as a snorkel, I can take water up to my windsheild and the engine will stay dry.

wrap it in something to insulate the pipe. you will get TONS of heat coming through that shiny metal pipe and heating up the incoming air. so it will still be a hot air intake...but very cool!

I know you're probably in an area that doesn't see much rain, but that would be my only concern (besides insulating the tube as previously mentiones).

HAHA re-read original post. College Station is just north of houston, It's the rainforest of texas. It's been field tested and guarden hose tested. And yea I was thinking of using exhaust wrap for the metal tube over the head.

yeah...or you could put the cowl plating back on and not worry about it at all...wont restrict flow cuz it's a high pressure zone...and it'll block rain and stuff...
good looks man...i've seen all kinds of home-made snorkel setups and CAI setups...and if you put some rubber gromet material around the pipe that will look OEM or aftermarket......good job

Nice work. I will be ripping your ideas off within the hour. Tell me about the hurst shifter. Being an old hot rodder dude, I LOVE the way it looks. How does it work, how do you like it, where did you get it, and how much did it cost?
Thanks, and awesome mods. |

I know where I am at we do get our fair share of rain and snow. Two weeks ago we had a quick rain shower that dropped an inch of water in just a 10 minute rain session. It was coming down in barrels. Sitting at a light with a paper element would mildly concern me. I figured it was worth mentioning. On a similar subject, I know one of the off-road publications had an article about different filter media. Paper, cotton guaze and foam. One section dealt with resistance to water and oil saturation. I want to say foam resisted those two elements the best where paper wouldn't (of course) and cotton guaze had issues as well.

The hurst was a little over $200 shipped from Jegs. Worth every penny, it made the jeep fun to drive all over again. Much shorter and firmer shifts Quote:
Dude Alaska? You see more snow in April than I see in 10 years. I bet a small enough screen would work over the cowl. but it would need constant cleaning.

I dont have a filter in mine.. its just a tube from the cowl to the stock airbox which is otherwise sealed. the snow builds up on the cowl, melts from the heat of the motor when youre just sitting wiping snow off, but then when you get going, it freezes again. I started running REALLY lean til I just disconnected the tube at the airbox for the winter.
