Parking brake problem. Rod came out of lever. Need Help ASAP.
Hello,
I hit the button on my parking brake too hard, and the button, spring, and rod came out. The rod sticks back down in all the way, but I can't get it in the right spot, because the brake will not set properly. I can pull up the lever without pressing the button. I took out the middle compartment thing, so I can see down at where the rod attaches. I can't quite see inside the piece it attaches too. I can feel underneath a piece moving which sets and releases the brake. If I set the brake, I can push the button to release it, but it will not set, unless I turn the rod upside down and push it in, or do it with my fingers underneath. Does anyone know if there is a trick to getting the rod to sit back in the lever properly? Thanks!

Glue the button back on the knurled end of the rod, and old it in place with tape overnight until the glue has dried. Epoxy works well for this role.

Jeff,
That answer is not to the question I asked. I have no problem with the button and I do not need to glue or tape anything. Mine did not break, and it slides and sticks on the metal rod just fine. I am asking how the rod inside the lever connects to the parking break mechanism. I slid off the rubber boot to reveal the metal lever, and in back of that is a mechanism that the metal rod must slide into/attach to somehow. The metal rod came out of the mechanism - this is my problem. This metal rod has a notch in the end where it take a 90 degree turn and after one half inch takes another 90 degree turn and continues straight for one inch. Someone on this board must have had this problem. Please help! Thanks!!

I had this happen a few months ago, The end of the rod that sits down in the lever should be a semi-circle(make sure its not bent). You said you have the rubber off which is good. Pull up the lever and with your other hand reach down through the glovebox or though the wire bristle stuff around the lever, and on the bottom side there is a ratcheting mechanism that clicks on the teeth of the brake mechanism. The lever just pulls this ratcheting piece against the teeth so the brake can't slip down and when pushed it releases it. Stick the rod in with the parking brake engaged. You have to start with it below the lever and kinda loop the hook around the ratcheting mech. and then move it up into the groove on the bottom side of the lever and put the rubber back over it and then put the spring and button back on. Hope this helps it is kinda hard to explain.

Okay, I believe mine is bent, because it is not in a semi-circle shape if it is the same one. I will try bending it, and see if I can get it to catch while the brake is engaged.
Thanks for this. It helps a lot! So the metal rod actually catches on the bottom of the racheting mechanism thing that sits in the teeth of the gear which controls the brake? Does anyone else have a description of how to fix this problem?

Excellent!
This forum has saved me a ton of money once again! Thank you to the guy who told me my metal rod might have been bent - it was! The semi-circle shape had been bent into two perfect 90 degree angles and I had no idea it had been bent. I put it in the vice and turned it back into a semi-circle, and I got it to stick in there in about 5 minutes! Peace! Douglas
