P0700, P1698, P1694 codes on '98 Cherokee?

Not even a nibble in the general drivetrain section, so I thought I would try here in the Cherokee forum:

Folks,

My daughter had problems with her '98 4.0L Cherokee yesterday. Midway through her trip to college, it acted as if it didn't want to shift or move, revved way up before it finally did shift, and set the check engine light. Once she arrived, turned it off for a while, and restarted it, it drove fine, and she made it back home.

Transmission fluid seems fine. I'm reading codes P0700, P1694, P1698, which seem like pretty generic transmission codes.

I did have to disassemble and clean her neutral safety/ reverse light switch recently, but encountered no problems with that (that I am aware of). Does anyone have an idea of where to start looking for problems? Where is the transmission control module located on this vehicle?

Thanks a lot for your help!
Regan

the p700 code is a generic trans code which needs a DRBIII scan to give you exact details not sure about the p1694 but a p1698 is a PCM failure eeprom write denied which could be the result of the trans code,I would take it to a trans shop and have them run the scan and go from there.I had the same problem in mine I through the p700 code in my 98 and it turned out to be a torque converter clutch solenoid cost me about 350 for the shop to fix it.I dont know a whole lot about working on the trans so I had to leave it in the hands of the shop.Good luck

P1694 (M) No CCD Messages Received From ECM Bus communication failure to PCM.

P1698 No CCD Messages Received From PCM Bus communication failure to PCM. A "Companion DTC" was set in both the ECM and PCM.

Possible Causes
CCD Bus (-) circuit open between PCM and TCM.
CCD Bus (+) circuit open between PCM and TCM.
Transmission CCD bus wiring damaged.
Faulty TCM.

Diagnostic Procedure
1. Using scan tool, clear TCM DTCs. Start engine and let idle for at least 2 minutes. Using scan tool, retrieve TCM DTCs. If DTC P1694 returns, go to next step. If DTC P1694 does not return, go to step 5.

2. Check instrument cluster gauges for proper operation. If fuel gauge and speedometer operate properly, go to next step. If fuel gauge and speedometer do not operate properly, see appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article.

3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray PCM harness connector. PCM is located at left front of engine compartment. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Measure resistance of CCD BUS (-) circuit (White/Black wire) between TCM harness connector and Gray PCM harness connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in CCd BUS (-) circuit (White/Black wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.

4. Measure resistance of CCD BUS (+) circuit (Violet/Brown wire) between TCM harness connector and Gray PCM harness connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in CCd BUS (+) circuit (Violet/Brown wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace TCM.

5. Conditions necessary to set DTC P1694 are currently not present. Inspect related wiring and harness connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, check for broken, bent, backed-out or corroded terminal pins. Check for chafed, pierced or partially broken wires inside insulation. Repair as necessary.

The P0700 can be ignored.

Bus Failure or a No Bus indicated on the odometer points a failure of one of the 5 volt sensors, or a short/open circuit. Start by checking the fuses under the hood and in tyhe fuse box. Inspect the wire harness for obvious damage from melted or chafed insulation or pinched wires. Be sure to carefully inspect your previous work and the wires/wire harness to the NSS. Inspect the wires to the Crankshaft Postion Sensor (CPS) and test the CPS.

The 97-01 TCU is under the dash near your right kneecap.

.
CPS TESTING PROCEDURE 1991 – 2001 4.0L H.O. engines

1. Near the rear of intake manifold, disconnect sensor pigtail harness connector from main wiring harness.
2. Place an ohmmeter across terminals B and C (See Image). Ohmmeter should be set to 1K-to-1OK scale for this test.
3. The meter reading should be open (infinite resistance). Replace sensor if a low resistance is indicated.
