![]() Just wondering why the overseas and WJ's use that air container (i dont know what to call it) above the intake?? Does it help out with performance any? Just a little confused about why they got it and not us...

I've been curious of what the purpose of that "thing" is too.

At least that is a RHD XJ.. come to think of it, I can't remember seeing that kind of airboxe in any XJ here in Finland. Not too long ago I took two different WJs for a test drive, other had the I6 but it didn't have that "extra" airbox either. So I don't think all overseas/ export XJs (or WJs) have that.
I suppose it could have something to do with only the Aussie models or something.. ![]()

It's most likely a sound deadening box to help cancel out the intake air pulses. Most cars have them somewhere in the intake, but the stock XJ doesn't have anything. I guess they figured USDM XJ's should just be "louder"...who knows.

Older 4.0's had a little silencer in the intake tube. I dont think it did much aside from get in the way though, lol. Im not 100% sure if it was just Renix, or if it was early HO's. My intake is loud as hell and im proud of it, you can hear it a few Jeep lengths up... ![]()

I don't like it, just looks like more surface area to absorb heat.

That is an air silencer as stated earlier. They help reduce sound on acceleration. Perhaps some overseas locations have strict sound laws.

Yes, an air silencer. Up to '97 it was a bit different, that thing is used on all european XJs. It probobaly even robs the power, those 4.0 were rated 177 hp in Europe, mostly due to lower compression ratio, restrictive catalytic converter and I think that big box doesn't help either.

Don't know about Poland, but at least here in Finland only Renix- based (non-HO) 4.0 liter engines were rated at 177hp, and they did NOT have those weird air intakes.
High Output models are rated at the higher HPs, and I'm not too sure all of them had those airboxes. I still haven't seen too many XJs here with those pictured, so not all 4.0 liter XJs in Europe came equiped with that airbox. Also, I don't think the European versions came with a different and/or more restrictive cats. At the time when they started importing XJs to Europe, there were not too many western Europe countries where catalytic converters were mandatory. In many countries it wasn't mandatory before as late as 1993, or even later. So it would've been waste of money for AMC/ Chryco to install different cats to "euro- XJs" since they already had good enough cats to pass the European smog tests.. Btw., you have to remember SAE horsepower and DIN horsepower ratings are slightly different..
