Oil Leak Problem

I got a letter from my brother. He has an oil leaking problem in a 98ish XJ. They rebuilt the engine last summer and it's been in the shop a couple times since because of a leak. (I'm guessing from around the main seal)

Excerpt from his letter,
"Hometown Auto has had the Cherokee for 2 days. They haven't been able to find the source of the oil leak. They've removed the rear main seal and examined it and the journal and cannot find anything wrong with either. The only problem that they've encountered for the second time was installing the oil pan. They couldn't put on the pan without having difficulties lining up the bolt holes without a lot of prying to get the bolts started.
Do you think that you can ask somewhere online if someone else had encountered this problem and has found a solution to it?"

I'm guessing that the pan might have been damaged while it was off during the rebuild.

From your post and your brother's letter, it doesn't appear that the exact root cause of the leak has been established.

Leaks can be tough to isolate. Sometimes shops add a UV dye to the oil, run for a bit, then take a special blacklight to the area to determine exactly where the oil is leaking.

You gotta know exactly where the leak is coming from before you can fix it....
