oil leak

Had a small oil leak which was determined to be the rear engine seal. wasn't a bad leak but i wanted to get it fixed before it got worse. Long story short the guy told me I have a small groove in my crankshaft. Now I am leaking oil worse than before and it is leaking on my exhaust and my wife almost refuses to be seen with me in the jeep I always use 10w30 and he replaced the oil with 5w30. I am am going to change the oil and replace with 10w30 or possibly sae 30 at least for warm weather. Any thoughts?

Did the mech fix the RMS? I wonder if he scored the crank removing the seal.

I'd also get a large extinguisher to keep in the XJ. lol

I'd be asking him what he means by, "a small groove in my crankshaft". Is is scored? Gouged? Where?

I doubt the 5W is your problem. More likely he just did a lousy job.

Is the RMS leak like an infamous 4.0L issue? My an my brother's xj's both have a small leak in the same spot

Thanks for all the replies. Not sure what to do but i have to do something, I can't keep driving my jeep this way. I have been looking all over cars.com etc and a nice low miles XJ is $8,000+. A guy I know has a 2001 for sale with 150,000 miles for $3,800 which is ok but I am not anxious to buy a 2001 with that number of miles due to the head problems I have read about here on 2000-2001 models. The best idea right now seams to be a rebuilt 4.0 which I figured I would do eventually anyway. Jeep wants about $3,200 for a remanafactured which seesm a bit high when I can get one from autozone for about $1,700 complete with water pump etc.

I live very near Jasper Indiana were Jasper rebuilt engines come from but I know several people who don't think much of their products so I am not sure which would be best. I have a friend who has had good luck with autozone. Also should I try to get one that is pre 2000 due to the head issue or is that not a concern with a rebuild?

My wife thinks I have lost my mind but I want to have a cherokee around and since I have had this one for a long time and know the vehicle this seems to make the most sence. I figure I will have about $2500 to $3000 in the job but that seems like a small investment considering all the use I will be able to get out of it. I just can't bear to part with my XJ

You want to rebuilt your engine because of a RMS leak? I think your mechanic is full of it. He probably messed up something. Maybe he put it the wrong side out, or your oil pan gasket is leaking, not the RMS. If your crankshaft or bearings were bad, you would notice a change in the oil pressure.

replace, Rear main seal, and oil pan gasket... the rear main seal isn't that hard... you don't have to pull the tranny to get to it. While your at it, replace the oil pan gasket since you gotta take that off anyways. If your not lifted, jack the jeep up as high as you can so the front suspension droops so the oil pan will pop out.

and also do what everyone else said... talk to your/another mechanic because he might of just done a sh*tty job

There are plenty ways for a non jeep specific mechanic to screw up replacing the rear main seal and quite frankly, it sounds like the guy screwed it up. It is however easily done by a person with average mechanical skill in the driveway if you take your time and follow directions.

Several write ups exist with pics and even a youtube video

My standard response to suspected RMS leaks:

I'd be looking up above first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak. . A leak at the back of the valve cover could produce the same symptoms. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon just yet.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for 2 simple reasons. First off, the engine sits nose-up and oil will run back to that area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

Thanks again for all the responses. I have been busy lately and had not checked back until just now. As I mentioned before I know just enough to be dangerous so i stay away from advanced projects for the good of myself and the jeep

What seems odd is that the leak had gotten a little better but was still leaking a good bit. So a few days ago i decided to change the oil, this time I used Havoline SAE 30. Alway before I had used 10W30 but as i mentioned the repair guy used 5W30 I decided to replace 1 quart with a bottle of lucas oil treatment with the stop leak, not usually big on such things but the way I was leaking I decided I had nothing to lose.

Thought I would run it for a while and then change the oil and filter again. After abot 60-75 miles of driving the leak has almost stopped, possibly better than before the "REPAIR"
