oil filter oil leak?
ok so i came home and i always park in one spot in my driveway but i decided to park in another for once and i saw an oil puddly nothing huge but noticable enough so i check everything and dont find anything, then i checked my oil filter and thats the problem on the bottom of it i found oil like when i touched my hand under it, so i did an oil change and i got a new filter a fram one when i last had an stp just changing it up to see if it made a difference and i checked after driving it and theres still oil coming out of there, i checked to make sure the seal was off the old filter its tightened up good and im just wondering if anyone has had the same problem with a leak out of the oil filter?
thanks guys - Alex

I have it too, cant tell where its coming from but it seemed so insignificant that i didnt really spend that much time on my back in the 10 degree weather looking for the problem haha. my oil filter always has a little bit of oil on the bottom of it, and it is on tight enough iv checked that 3 times. i was going to replace the oil filter adapter o-rings when its warmer out.

kinda basic questions but
did you put the filter on all the way (1 full turn after the seal contacts)? and did you oil it before putting i ton? only other thing i could think would be that the face the filter seals against is marred -matt |

Might not be the oil filter itself, but an o-ring on the filter adapter?

I had the same issue with my 90, and when we looked at it, it was the oil filter flange o ring, that would be a real likey cantidate, and I have to ask. Why are you using a fram oil filter? You can buy a Mopar at Wal mart for $5-6 bucks and way better quality, I have seen 3 engines fail due directly to Fram oil filter, and thee poor quality. 1 filter blew the seam, and lost all engine oil, seized engine before it was realized. 2 two seperate Cummins diesel engines, the internal filter element, AKA: paper, broke down and went into the engine plugging the oil journals, thus starving the engine, leading to engine failure. Cummins will NOT warranty an engine failure, when a FRAM oil filter is used, they are NOT Cummins certified, that may tell you something, if a company like Cummins black balls them, there is something to it. |

Fram filters suck. Most will leak when placed horisonatly. Mopar are better, but I perfer Mobil 1 filters.

hmm mines installed tightly too the only reason i got a fram is because autozone has a million stp oil filters and a million fram ones also so i thought they were a good brand? and what do u mean by being placed horizontally ? and are the o rings hard to replace?

how much do you think it would be at a mechanic to fix like an estimate?

the o rings arent a hard job from what i understand, but frustrating. im going to do it myself, would never consider a mechanic. however, say a 1-2 hour job, at avg of $90 labor for mechanics, not worth it. i hear that the o ring kit at a dealership is only around 20 dollars.
as the horizontal comment, it is referring to the orientation of the oil filter, its on its side because that is how the adapter works...i thought fram was decent too, but apparently not, ill be changing mine. |

Fram was good till they started outsourcing there tin work. Allied signal still assembles them but all parts are imported.

ONE FULL TURN IS TOO TIGHT!!!!!!!! ALL manufacturers recommend NO MORE THAN 3/4 of a turn AFTER the gasket contacts the mating surface. You should be able to do that with your hands no problem.
