oil filter leak?

I have some seriously raunchy oil leaks and it looks like 80% of it is coming from the oil filter in a very gushing manner, if the oil pan gasket is contributing at all its very little, but theres tons of fluid around and below the oil filter itself and on the bottom of the oil pan by the drain plug... its STUPID HARD to get to the filter so I was wondering if this is a common leak from the filter and if theres an easy fix or a writeup.

This is a very common leak. It is the o-ring between the block and the adapter your oil filter screws into. Look in the FAQs above - there are two or three links to write-ups for changing the o-ring. The hardest part is getting the clearance to get the bolt out.

In fact, I have the leak too and it is getting worse. I tried to get the torx bit in there to do this fix and gave up once. I've heard that a good way to do this is to unbolt the passenger side engine mount and jack up the engine to get clearance. does anyone have an opinion about that approach?

If the oil is coming from around the oil filter, it's more than likely the oil adapter o-ring. There are some links in the tech links faqs section.

If it's gushing, it's more likely the filter itself as opposed to the adapter. I would try tightening the filter first.

Really?
May I venture a guess that you haven't replaced you rear main seal yet?

Make sure it isn't the oil sending unit leaking before you go buy o-rings.
