Oil Filter leak

Finally chased down my newest leak - from where the oil filter bolts in. Not sure what that thing is called, but it's leaking right at the block end. What in the hell is that called?

I haven't really looked at it too well, but I'm assuming it either bolts on, or a big pipe wrench will take it off (if it threads in). Anyone have similar experience?

There are three o-rings associated with the oil filter adapter. Replacing them is about a 10-minute job. The adapter is secured by a single hollow bolt. It has either a hex or torx head, depending on year model. The two smaller o-rings should be available at a parts store. For the large one, you will probably have to go to the dealer or an aircraft parts house. Or the dealer can supply all three.

I just went to the dealer and paid like $5 for the set. I have a brief write up on when I changed mine in the FAQ/tech sticky near the top of this page. I believe it's on the engine maint and performance page.

My dealer charged around $9 for the set. That's why I suggested getting the two smaller rings elsewhere. Actually they charged for each individual o-ring; maybe the "set" is cheaper but they did not have it. ????
The two smaller ones would have been about 35 cents elsewhere.

Right after I posted this thread I ran out to go parts chasin'. Found that the dealer was the only place that could supply the set - all three for $3. I'll change that tomorrow then, thanks guys.

Quick note - Balloo, I love your cardomain page. Great pictures, great Jeep. I pray that the one picture of your finger is the only bit of blood your Jeep has drawn - mine already has about a quart of mine on various parts.

Ahhh yeah, the XJ loves me.......well loves the taste of blood anyway! lol!

Hopefully you can find the 9/16 hex bit (if that's what yours is) easily. That was the hardest part of the whole install.

I hear ya man - these things like to bite us.

Full access to a machine shop tonight means I'll probably find whatever I need to replace it.

That, or I'll just wait until I need an oil change.
