Great job Kyle
Btw., as a reminder, not all XJs need a SYE. If you have a PTO (power take off) behind your TC, it already eliminates the slip yoke. Here's a bad picture of mine behind a 242: (it's the "thing" on the upper left corner) ![]()

in all my years of "I could be doing something else but I'll waste time on the jeep forum" I've never seen that....
more information on this: "Power Take Off" you call it... is this another rare hidden stock option? (like the stock winch in the front bumper... that's a gem) ![]()

I wish my Jeep came from Finland. That would save me about $600 bucks.

Very nice write up Kyle. Has anyone used a front TJ shaft in the rear of an XJ, I'm asking because we have like 7 front TJ shafts at the dealership I work for and not one XJ shaft.
As for the factory installed winch I have seen two of them on 87/88 XJ's when I first started working for a Jeep dealer |

Rob, just measure them out and see. Chances are they'll be too short, though.

I know most of the XJs sold in Finland up to beginning of 1993 (when the tax-free law changed) were equipped with a PTO. IIRC, PTOs were factory installed. There are a lot of PTO equipped XJs in Sweden too, dunno about central Europe. The bad things about 'em that I know of: *they tend to be leaky - you gotta remove it, open it up, change the seals, clean all mating surfaces and use RTV. ..and it starts leaking a little later again. It's not usually that bad though, just a few drops a day. * pretty strong units fromthe inside, but the mechanism to use 'em is prone to failing. PTO is cable controlled, and the actual procedure to engage and disengage it is pretty weird. * it's slightly longer than a short- style HD SYE.

PTOs are common on older American military and farm vehicles. Search Jeep PTO winch and you will get several hits for older vehicles.
I think it was cost and ease of manufactureability that killed it here in the states.

People usually don't read the stickies.
But I added it to the Tech Links for FAQ sticky.
