Obtaining/Replacing Floor Panels
Hello,
The floor panels on my 96' Cherokee are pretty much rusted out (Too many winters on salted Vermont roads). In one spot you can even feel the bottom of the carpeting. I'm looking for advice on replacing them. I've been told that I should remove the seats, pull back the carpets, get some sheet metal and bend it to fit, clear out the rusty areas, pop-rivet the sheet metal in, replace the carpet and seats, and put some sort of chemical on the remaing rusty areas that changes the chemical composition of rust to that of a slightly stronger metal, and finally cover the bottom in bondo. Does this proccess sound right? What type of metal should I use? How should I go about bending it? Are there actual replacement floor panels I can obtain relatively affordably? Thanks for the help! Peter

Just buy new panels, its easier than fabbing your own. Someone is selling them. When I replaced the floor in my FSJ Cherokee I used galvanized so it wouldnt rust again, cut the worst of the old metal out, and treated the rest.

take the carpet right out, and the seats, front and back, trim etc, take out metal, replace with the above, then hurculine the entire interior. then with the carpets out, rent a carpet steam cleaner, clean the carpets real nice, reinstall them and the trim, then clean the crap out of the underside where there is old metal, use a wire brush etc, then hurculine the bottom too, right up to the top of the quarter pannel and ur set, all the rust prone areas are sealed with hurculine, alot stronger than any rust paint ull find

Thanks, for the advice! Buying those floor pans will make things much easier than forming my own. Although I'm gonna have to make a bit more money so I can afford them. Are there any other places that sell them a little cheaper? If not, I'll just have to wait a bit (getting a job during college sucks).
Thanks, Peter |
