NP231 on a 1997 rear output shaft OD?

I need to know what the OD of the rear out put shaft on an NP231 strapped to the bottom of a 1997 XJ.

I'm Getting ready to do a SYE and i'm going to use a H&T a friend of mine was going to make me a drilling guide so i can make sure it gets drilled dead strait. But in order to do this he needs to know the Outside diameter of the shaft.

Can anyone help me out?

I measured the width of the NP231 output shaft with a caliper and got 1.173 inches.

I followed the instructions on GoJeeps web page and used an angle grinder with a cutting wheel. The wheel left a small nipple when it parted off. I hammered that flat and center punched the middle point of the hammered flat spot.

Thank you for the measurement. Our plan is that he is going to take a block of scrap metal and put a hole in it that is that size (1.173) and then drill a hole dead center of that that is the exact same size of the drill bit i have to use before i tap the shaft. This insures that my drill bit will stay dead center of the shaft and that it will go in perfectly strait.

I'm freaked that i am going to drill this hole and have it be off and i'll end up fixing the shaft so i would rather waste a block of cheap metal to keep this drill bit strait.

I've also heard that the tap that comes with the RE Hack and tap is rather cheap so i'm going to barrow a really nice one and tap it with that.

Have him drill the guide hole a smaller size. You will want to pre-drill with a drill bit approximately 1/2 of the finished size. Then drill to the tap drill size.

See if you can borrow some split point stub drills (they cut better) and a start drill.

Back the tap out often and use WD-40 or similar to blast chips out of the hole.

I just finshed my RE hack n tap a few weeks ago. Works great.

Thanks for the advice. I'm planning on using the front drive shaft off an xj as my new drive shaft i'm trying to hunt one of those down right now. All the yards are only open from 8-5 m-f around here and that is when i work and i dont get any time off for another 6 months.
