Not so technical question

Hey....just bought an '89 Cherokee Pioneer, first 4X4 so excuse the dumb question please! Whats the proper way to switch into 4 wheel drive? I'm guessing that it shouldn't be "on the fly" but should I be in neutral etc.? or what. Don't want to be breakin stuff you know. Thanks in advance (no owners manual by the way)

On the fly except 4Lo. But you will need to be slightly rolling when going into 4Lo for the gears to mesh.

You do the same for popping out of 4wd. Every one but 4LO can be done on the fly.

This is probably obvious but I wouldn't recommend doing that shift above 45mph or so either.

Go to the JEEP website and watch the video animation on JEEP 4x4 systems. It explains how it works and how - when - where to use it. The video is for the Liberty, but the Cherokee and Liberty are the same.
