Thats a pretty broad question..Well Miles on an XJ (if maintained) are not a big issue. Most XJ's 4.0's can go for 300k+ The aw4 Transmissions easily go 200k+ There are different transfer case configs and Rear and Front Axle setups. They are all good in my opinion. In the sticky threads you will find any and all info you need on an XJ.Read into them. You will find all the mods you can do etc etc.Buying an XJ was the best thing I have ever done.I have a 90 Wagoneer Limited with 89k.I love it!Good luck in your search and dont hesitate to ask any questions.

Ya, sorry 'bout the vagueness of that. I guess what I meant was, "are there any known issues I should be aware of and on the look out for?".

I'm mechanically inclined and have been building and racing watercooled VWs for years, have build and raced rails, etc, so, fixing anything isn't an issue. Just wanted to know what to keep an eye out for as far as known problems.

Thanks

Oil leaks:
The valve covers and rear main bearing seals on the I6 are common but easy to fix for most people.
Coolong:
XJs run hot (210*) so keep an eye on this. But reading your post this shouldn't be an issue.
Like it was said before the I6 is bullet proof if well maintained. Good luck in looking.

Im kinda a newbie when it comes to XJ's but I am mechanically inclined as well. From what I have gathered from my time on here Is the rear main seal leaking..and or the o ring leaked for the oil filter.Rear seal,Big messy job.But fixable. They are common problems.Blow By is another problem but totally fixable.Transmission wise like i said they are known to be very rugged transmissions. The 4.0 87-90 I believe is called a RENIX.then they went to the 4.0 HO..they both have there benefits,I have heard that the casting on the renix engine is stronger then that of the HO..Possibly making the renix last longer. The difference in HP between the 2 is 15hp..Im just throwing my 2cents in from what I have learned. My fiancee has a 95 XJ sport with 150k and it runs just as good if not better then my 90 with 89k.The only difference is her rear seal leaks and mine does not yet,lol..There are alot of folks(helpful) folks with alot more knowledge then me that will be more then happy to help you.Good luck. But it is an investment you definatly will not shed a tear over!

What's a good price range I should look at?

And, are there radiator upgrades and/or oil cooler kits available. (Not really concerned about oil cooler kits, I can make my own if need be)
The reason I ask is I'm in Phoenix AZ.

well I got my XJ -1990 Wagoneer Limited.just like a cherokee..with 85k for 1000 bucks in near mint condition from a farmer.Thats Rare. The book on mine (low book) is 2,450.A 1994-1995 with around 100k-120k should be around 1600-2600 roughly,Thats PA prices. You can go older with some work from anywhere reasonable 800 bucks to 1400...These are prices I have seen around.I have seen XJ's with 200000k go for 1500 though.Depends on the overall condition..XJ's hold there value by far..My fiancee might be selling her 1995 XJ Sport All Stock 146k for around 1500.it needs a rear seal I believe and a good cleaning but runs like a tank.If we decide to sell it I will post i there good luck in your search!

Id go for a jeep that hasnt been modified or wheeled too much. Try and get a feel for how well it was serviced, get records if you can.

I got mine, 94 I6 5spd with 110k miles on it for $300. Had 3 or so inch lift already and some visual things done to it (I hate the hood scoops). Front end was wrecked as well, but cost me all of $125 in junkyard parts. Also took about 2hrs with a strap tied to a telephone pole to straighten it out. Engine runs superstrong though, and everything else is awesome. I love it.
