Noise coming from driver side...exhaust leak?
Hello,
Well as usual by replacing something another problem appeared. So I finally replaced the motor mounts on my jeep. There was no rubber left and the engine rattling was a little annoying at stop lights. When I started her up I noticed a louder noise than usual and she idled like crap. On a 40 mile freeway trip I noticed that I had no low-end power and the motor vibrated more and was loud. First thing that I could think of was exhaust leak. Reasons: 1) Before I fixed the motor mounts, they were so bad that I heard noise while driving from the exhaust pipe banging on the transfer case cross member. This could of caused a small crack/leak but I never experienced a 2) While installing the new motor mounts I had to life the engine couple of inches from where it was sitting in order to line up the bolts. In doing so may have opened up the crack/leak. Question: What do you guys think?? I took a glance under neath and didnt see any gaping holes. I had a small leak on my YJ once but never felt this much power loss. Also ive looked around for a new header, pace setter is junk. any other brands fir the 89 year? Dont see alot of applications for the renix engine. Thanks, Lyle

I did have to remove the oil pump on the pass side to remove the motor mount bolt. I dont think this could of caused what is happening because my oil pressure seems ok, 40-60 psi depending on acceleration.

I would look for a vacuum leak. Did you remove the air cleaner housing to reach the driver side? Not sure of your year but my 1990 has a vacuum manifold of the drivers side and you could had knocked something loose there to cause a power issue. The noise is probably exhaust leak since it is a common flaw on the I-6 to crack I think mine was around the #5-6 exhaust port.
Here is a link to a manifold seller. You can probably find a better deal than this $219 stock style header. http://www.quadratec.com/products/product_search.php?cv=1000&cn=Headers&c=76&pg=1

Started the Jeep today and everything is running fine now. I think the engine knock sensor somehow retarded the timing causing it to run like crap. As to why the knock sensor was doing this....I don't know.
