2000 Jeep XJ 4.0 2wd

Problem: no start, no crank.
Symptoms: 4 days ago the jeep started by a slow moving starter as if the battery was dieing... Slow whinding up. I hear a suttle click under the glove box when turning key all the way..

What i have done:

1)replaced positive and negetive battery wires/terminals.

2)replaced with a Used starter off an 03 Grand cherokee (the solenoid wire connecter was different, so I spliced my old wire to the new starter) yes the starter tested good at pep boys.

3)checked all fuses in kick panel and under the hood. There all good...no burns or broken peices inside.


????? Possible relay? Ignition? I have had a tumbler issue in the ignition and have had to hit it a frw times with a hammer to knock it loose... All lights, radio, horn etc all work. I do get a beeping sound when the ignition key is on as well..
Also have jumped the solenoid wire to the positive terminal on the starter and the starter whinded up...the key was not on...

4)new battery , also have tryed jumping it with the new battery.

Natural safety switch. Try starting in neutral.

There are ways to bypass the switch for testing purposes. The switch is repairable by cleaning and regreaseing.

If not clean could this still be the NSS. OR would it start in neutral either way?

Could still be the NSS, you can pull the connector up in the engine compartment and cross a couple terminals to see if the switch is the issue.

Unplug the switch and run a jumper from terminal B to C.

Make sure you add the jumper on the harness side of the connection and not the switch side, harness side should have the female terminals that you could stick a paperclip into.

If it starts like this your NSS is bad.

So basically run a wire/ paper clip from b to c on the female side and keep it unplugged and try to start?

Where is this switch at ?

If its not this what else could it be

Check if you have voltage at the small wire at the starter. when the key is turned to start. Have a buddy help.

You pretty much got it.

The switch is located on the transmission, and the connector should be on the firewall fairly close to the dipstick.

If this is not your issue, it could be a bad ignition switch, or even a broken wire somewhere.

Ok so I jumped B and C with a wire and still nothing.... Im ****ing lost with this ****

ahhh yes. It was the ignition lock cyclinder .. it wasnt pushing in far enough to engage I guess. I pressed in on the key fairly hard and felt a slight push and she turned over!!! Thank you for the help. So I guess I need a new ignition ? or did I really screw something up with all the banging around when the key was stuck.
