no fan shroud...overheat?

I just got my jeep on the road and the coolant catch tank will bumble and overflow if I drive it alot, I got a new water pump and thermastat, could it be the fan shroud doing it, my electric fan isnt hooked up too, so i was going to hook it up to a toggle and run it on hot days and in traffic, I would think its the electric fan not being hooked up right, I just know sometimes the fan shroud could do it too,

my question is is the fan shroud really needed?

1) You gotta fix the Elect. fan!!!!
2) If the shroud is missing, get one!
3) Check the coolant bottle for hairline cracks. Sometimes they are very hard to see but that is a common problem and will cause the cooling system to pull air in. Air in cooling system bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently fixed my nephews 90 XJ. It had a cracked coolant bottle and the Elect fan was not working. The Jeep dealer had told the previous owner that it needed an engine.

A properly working cooling system doesn't need one. I was sitting in traffic for two hours last night an my efan kicked on once.

the shroud is pretty important, putting one on (after going all winter w/o one bc it broke) lowered my temp 10 degrees standing still.

Maybe in your neck of the woods you don't need it, but you do in California, especialy if you want to use the A/C !
Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear on that.

The elect.fan is part of the factory cooling system, so if it doesn't work than you don't have a "properly working cooling system" now do you?

Been driving for a year without mine, didnt have an affect on my cooling system when I removed it (it was broken). I am overheating at a stop, but thats due to my leaking radiator.....trying to hold out till my stimulus check gets here

I've been on the beach, on street pressure, with 4 people in my jeep, 85 degrees outside, A/C on. The efan only kicked on when the a/c cycled. not trying to be a **** but if you have everything else in working order (most importantly a good fan clutch) you're good to go.

Check your coolant bottle. If it needs to be replaced get one from the dealer, not one of the cheapos from ebay. I tried one from ebay and it was junk. I ended up getting one from the dealership. I eventually replaced everything in the coolant system. Check your radiator also, mine didn't appear to be leaking, even though the top few rows were missing.

I hate to say this, but in some parts of the country, 85 degrees isn't jack diddle for outside air temp in the summer.

Your situation (with no efan) may work fine in NY, but here in Phoenix, it would NOT cut it in the summer. Moral of story: DO NOT assume that all cooling situations are the same as yours.

I broke my fan shroud in NY and had it off for a week. It raised my temps in the spring to near overheating.
there was a huge difference from shroud to none. and that was my only problem.

Well stated Jeff!

I'm not familiar with the cheepo coolant bottles someone refered to above, but NAPA sells a good quality coolant bottle for the XJ. It appears to be a little thicker (heavier) than the OE Jeep bottle I pulled off the 90, and It's less $$ then an OE bottle at the dealer.

It's supposed to be over 100 degrees here in parts of So.CA. this weekend so have a cold one and try to stay cool!

Where did you tie into the E-fan wiring when you put the toggle in? I was thinking about doing it at the e-fan plug.

I am doing an A/C test. My A/C will work for a bit and then blow warm air. When the temp is high enough to turn on the e-fan it begins to work again. The e-fan will not go with just the A/C on. I want to toggle it and see if it cures the hot air blowing in while the A/C is on.
