New transmission for 2WD XJ--what to do?

I have a 1996 Cherokee XJ, 2-wheel-drive, 4.0L with the Warner AW4 tranny. Just put an OME lift kit on it, Rubicon wheels, a new set of Wrangler Duratracs...

The transmission is leaking a lot of fluid from the rear output and I fear the bearings may be worn out, rather than just the seal and bushing.

I'm not opposed to just replacing the transmission with the same type--that would seem to be the easiest thing to do. But before I do anything I want to investigate whether there might be other feasible options.

My fantasy solution would be to convert to a manual transmission. Is there any manual transmission that would bolt on to the 4.0L engine? Or if I wanted to try to go that route, would I really just have to do a whole crate motor/ tranny?

If I were to consider a crate motor, where might I best look to find such a thing?

(I don't hate the AW4 transmission--even as an automatic, my Cherokee's been fun to drive. I do miss having a manual though.)

You won't what is wrong until you look inside. If necessary another AW-4 is the easiest and cheapest solution. The 4.0L was available with manual transmissions, but making the swap is not exactly what one might call simple.

Agreed, a transmission swap in a computer controlled vehicle usually required an entire doner vehicle to complete. Partially because you'll need a new PCM, petals, clutch hydraulics, and transmission.

Your swap is even more troublesome because you need a 2wd transmission to swap in.

If it were mine I would have a shop replace the output seal and flush the transmission.
