new toy, whats next

I'm a college sstudent who just purchased a 96 cherokee classic with the 4.0L HO. It's loaded with power everything, only 96k miles and has oversized A/T's. My last car was an 84 wagoneer XJ that found the mud a time or two (I have the ticket to prove it). So im thinking i need a lift for my new one but i dont want anything too big it will spend most of the time on the highway. ive also been looking at grille guards. Ive got about $800 to spend. please give me advice on what i should look into getting.

P.s. new cherokee is in the shop, clutch went out after 3 days.

well 800 will get you tires and wheels

most lifts run $300+ for xj's and around 1000 for a good 4.5"
if your not gettin retreads your gunna be spending 500+ on tires
get more than a 4"lift you need a $500 sye
its not as simple as you think

if your are commited to this you could find out how to make your own lift and get some retreads that would be under 800.

check out www.rocky-road.com they have a cheap 3" budget bost with that you could get some 30-31's

well like i said ive got oversized tires on it, they must be the largest tire you can stuff in at stock heigth. so i was hopping to get a small 1.5"-2" lift and keep my tires. they have less than 1K miles on them.

since i wont be doing much off roading im not against a poly or body lift.

well seeing as your cherokee doesnt have a frame a body lift would be difficult

so you will probably need to get some 1.5" coil spacers and a 1" longer shackle that would give you about a 1" lift

i just did it to mine today.

i made it from

1" coil spacers(at most auto parts stores) or a few coil bosters work 2
a universal lift shackle at most auto parts stores
cost about 20 bucks the shackles need some cutting and stuff.

my fenders are trimmed so that makes a big diff.

its not a perminant lift just to hold me over until i get my s10 leafs and zj v8 coils

also look at that www.rocky-road.com in the budget bost section they have a 1.5- 2inch lift

I put a 2" BB on mine as the rig I just bought came with larger tires also and I had rubbing problems in back. Very happy with the results:

hey thanks for the rocky road site. thats nice. I think i might get one of those 2" budget lifts. How much work exactly is that? Will i need to buy shocks?what tools might i need?
Quick question, wouldn't a cold air intake system run a higher risk of getting water in the engine if you ran through some deep water holes?
I like the thought of the power gains. but i was just curious about the water thing

Thats why they made snorkels for xj jeeps so water wont bog down the engine. Heres an idea..

I just got my jeep out of the shop ($1300 later) and finally had time to look it over. I have 16" Jeep 5 spoke wheels with 18" A/T tires.

Do yall think a 2" lift would make it look dumb with those tires?
Should i go down to a 1" or 1.5"?

i dont really want to buy bigger tires.
