Holy crap, they made the limited in 2-door? Rock on. I'd ditch the bullet-hole sticker on the back, though. And try to ditch the all caps.

Your four-wheel drive is not shift on the fly, gotta do it from neutral or low speed in drive. Your transfer case is most likely an aluminum, chain driven 'part-time' case, the NP231, being New Process. No jeep is really part-time, the driveshaft will spin meaning it's not ever fullly out of four-wheel drive.

Power-ups are the roughly the same as any other car. Gotta spend $$, the amount varies.

While not recomended at speeds over a crawl, shifting 'on the fly' is very posible at speeds of 60mph & up. I shift mine in & out at all speeds with no problems(both my sel-trc & the com-trc). Take some time to get used to it though. Unless you spend your time on gravel & ice hiways like I do there's not much need to be shifting in/out of 4x4 at high speeds.
Do Not Use 4x4 on dry roads, my com-trc will even buck once in a while on some good sections of ice-roads.
Take some time to learn your ride & you'll be ok.

From what I've heard, shifting in and out at high speeds tears the 231 apart. Course, that's just what I've heard. I have yet to drop the sucker in my jeep. But, you Canadians are a very different breed. ;c) At least none of us are newfies, eh?

My 89 has a 242j TC and you can shift on the up to 45 mph anyway that's what the book says.. hope this helps. Need to know what kind of TC you have, look in the back of the TC it will tell you. If your shifter says 4x4 part time and 4x4 full the you have a 242j if not then you most likely have the 231 and yes they are both chain driven..

Can't get in, it says Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable! But from what your saying you have the NP 242 j TC. This has full-time and part-time 4x4.

but any idea on my leak though ???? its like a dribble coming out of the transfer case to the rear drive shaft is it dificult to change seals etc.... ???? i am going to do that, and change the tranny fluid and put some leak stop in there, the tranny was a little wet but i dont think its tranny fluid but i wanna be safe, the motor is the culpret it needs a valve cover gasket, this makes it sound like a piece of crap saying all this but i think its the valve cover gasket leaking and thats whats getting oil everywhere else

FIRST OF ALL NEVER NEVER NEVER USE STOP LEAK FOR THE FIX!!!!
Need to take and degrease under the jeep from the front to the rear and the engine compartment as well, in-order to see where all the leaks are from. Take notice for blow-by where it could be a trans leak just blowing back to the TC and driveshaft just a thought. Repairing TC's isn't all that hard. NP 231 and NP 242's are much easier than the order models

K guys sorry bout not having that picture ready, i have it right here

http:\\www.geocities.com\cruznlife1\4wd.html

whIch TC do i have ????

i understand the blowby and i'm like 90% sure its the motor leaking not the tranny, i just put the new u-joints on today, WOW WHAT A FABULOUS DIFFERENCE, the old ones were torn up no needles left and two bowls were cracked, well its noticeably smoother, and that nasty squeak is gone, now like i said i understand the blowby but i am 100% sure the TC has a small leak in it too, there a very clearly seen dribble coming out where the seal is.... thank you all so much for your help, and god bless

*EDIT* the part time light stays on regardless of where the shifter is when in 4wd when you go to 2wd it turns off.... also like i said i'm not exactly expierienced when it comes to this 4 wheel drive system at a standing stop in neutral i have to yank on that handle like a bear to pull up to different selections, i dont know if i can shift while moving or what, I JUST DONT WANNA BREAK ANYTHING !!!! someone with a written manual or something please help thanks alot

Go ahead & pull it up while your moving(slowly first). Just go slow & easy & don't jam it or pull like a bear. You shouldn't have too. You may feel the gears lightly touching & then it should slide right in.
Both of mine were a bit tricky at first due to lack of use by previous owners. Took a little coaxing at first to teach my xj's how they should perform

CruzNlife1 it's an NP 242 j TC. You need to get under the jeep and look at the back of the tc and you will find two nuts on the backside unscrew the top one and stick your finger in to see if there's any fluid if not use trans fluid. If the leak is in the back of the tc/rear driveshaft then you will be able to make repairs without dropping the tc. I will try to get my scanner working tonight and get you the info.
